In 2005, 1.9 million families (4.5 million persons) received TANF benefits, while 11.8 million households (25.7 million persons) collected food stamp benefits. In FY 2005 federal spending amounted to USD 16.5 million on TANF and USD 31.1 million on food stamps. 

The Medicare and Medicaid programs are the sources of the vast majority of Federal spending for health services. Medicare and Medicaid payment for patient care rendered in association with clinical research on a pharmaceutical agent therefore constitutes a potential subsidy of pharmaceutical R D. Nevertheless, there are no good estimates of clinical-trial-related health care costs paid for by Medicare and Medicaid (395). 

Excessive federal spending and monetary expansionism and rampant interventionism and tinkering with the productive apparatus of the economy have been antithetical to "letting a thousand flowers bloom" in the fields of innovation. As a result, the "Innovation Indicators"—the signs that tell us something about the health of the U.S. scientific and technical enterprise— have taken a decided dip over the past decade. 

But it soon became obvious that mere increases in Federal spending for RSD alone were not the total solution for the problems of lagging innovation and productivity in the U.S. 

The torturous compromise hammered out in Apri in Washington between the House GOP, Senate Dems, and President Obama for federal spending for the remainder of fiscal year 2011 (until September 31, 2011) has had this effect on the occupational safety and health landscape ... 

OSHA takes a cut of 1.2 million across the board, affecting all departments, as part of a two percent cut in general federal spending. 

With Senate Republicans vowing to block any legislation not related to federal spending, OSHA reforms won t get much attention any time soon — or will they ... 

Federal spending on the PFPB, in real terms in 2013 prices, has jumped from a little over R 35.7 million in 2006 to R 879.5 million in 2011, R 1.4 billion in 2012 and R 1.9 billion in 2013. In 2013, total spending on medicines rose to slightly over R 10 billion (Sala de Situacao em Saude, 2015). These data demonstrate the programme s importance and the need to coordinate it with production development policies, since rising demand has driven the increased production of generic medicines.
