Recently, Wongtangtintharn et al. (2004) showed that a series of iso- and animo-branched-chain fatty acids was cytotoxic to breast cancer cells. The highest activity was observed with iso-Ci o and the activity decreased as the chain-length increased or decreased from Ci6 o. As can be seen from Table 1, the specific activity of long chain acyl CoA synthetase is significantly depressed in the Novikoff hepatoma and host liver when compared with normal liver. These results agree with those of Weinhouse et al. (1973) that made it clear that the activity of the fatty acid activating enzyme is very low in poorly differentiated hepatomas. Nandanan et al. [35] reported the utilization of linseed oil as an MFA in nitrile rubber vulcanizates. Linseed oil not only acted as a plasticizer but also as the fatty acid component of the activator in the NBR vulcanizates. Use of linseed oil gave appreciable increase in properties like tensile strength, tear resistance, etc. while the viscosity of the compound was marginally lower than that of the control compound (which used di-octyl phthalate as the plasticizer). The vulcanizates containing linseed oil also exhibited increased cure rate as well as reduced leachability compared to the control at a dosage of 2-5 phr. This loading was seen to replace 6 phr DOP and 2 phr stearic acid in conventional NBR vulcanizates thereby reducing compound costs. [Pg.1034]

Enzyme-catalyzed transfer of KDO from CMP-KDO (127) into a lipid-A acceptor has been studied by Heath and coworkers,1 using a cell-free system from Escherichia coli O 111 J-5. LPS from the organism did not function as an acceptor, and only weak acceptor-activity was displayed147-148 by lipid A preparations obtained by mild, acid-catalyzed hydrolysis of LPS.
