Fat tails

Mouse lemurs survive the dry season, when food is scarce, by living off nourishment stored in their fat tail. Mouse lemur females share a spherical leaf nest with each other and their young, while males usually curl up by themselves. They all hunt at night as solitary individuals, eating primarily insects and some leaves, usually those bearing ant secretions. As they move about, they communicate with each other by high-pitched calls. [Pg.99]

Mouse lemurs are active, bu creatures, while the dwarf lemurs Ckeirogcdeus spp.) are rather sluggish all year. Dwarf lemurs are true hibemators, and are active c rly during the rainy season. The fat-tailed dwarf lemur (C. medius) stores fat at the base of its tail for use during... [Pg.99]

Native to the deserts and sandy terrain in Northern Africa, the Golden Fat Tail Scorpion is a terrestrial species that lives under rocks and other shelter. They avoid coastal areas or anywhere that is high humidity. Most are not known for burrowing, but they do hide under rocks. Some individuals may burrow from time to time. Unfortunately, their hiding places are often located near humans. For example, the Yellow Fat Tailed Scorpion often hides in crevices in walls made of stone or brick. [Pg.15]

Other variants of MV optimization have been proposed to address some of its shortcomings. For example, MV analysis presumes normal distributions for asset returns. In actuality, financial asset return distributions sometimes possess fat tails. Alternative distributions can be used. In addition, the MV definition of risk as the standard deviation of returns is arbitrary. Why not define risk as first- or third-order deviation instead of second Why not use absolute or downside deviation ... [Pg.767]

However, Jarque-Bera tests do not support this founding for both models. A closer inspection of the QQ-plots reveals indications for slightly fat-tailed distributions of the residuals. Hence, the models were re-fitted for Box-Cox-transformed dependent variables (with = 1.4747 and = 1.6363). For these models Jarque-Bera tests confirm the normality of residuals. Fbr the sake of brevity the detailed model specifications are not shown here as the general results are the same as for the original model. [Pg.184]

Unabsorbed gases are led to a FAT/tail gas scmbber. It is advisable to provide a candle-type demister in FAT to prevent subnucron mist particles in the exhaust gases. [Pg.12]

M obinsoni, vulpecula and P. gymnotis (Eisenberg and Golani, 1977). Saliva is apparently used for identification of sex and for recognition of individuals in the fat-tailed marsupial mouse, Sminthopsis crassicaudata (Ewer, 1968). [Pg.597]

In terms of economy, the yailau region is utilized as the main summer pasture. While the Karakul sheep graze mainly in the chul, the Merinos and fat-tailed breeds of sheep (including the Gissar breed) are pastured mainly in the yailau. Other agriculture is limited by low temperatures. [Pg.8]

Power-law distributions and infinite variance indicate high complexity of stochastic behaviour. Stochastic processes with infinite variance, although well defined mathematically, are extremely difficult to use and, moreover, raise fundamental questions when applied to real systems. In closed physical systems of equilibrium statistical mechanics variance is often related to the system temperature. In this case, infinite variance implies an infinite or undefined temperature. Nevertheless, power-law distributions are used in the description of open systems. They have increasing importance in describing, for example, complex economic and physiological systems. Actually, the first application of a power-law distribution was introduced in economics by Pareto s law of incomes. Turbulence in complex financial markets is also characterized by power-law distributions with fat tails. In financial systems, an infinite variance would complicate the important task of risk estimation. [Pg.16]
