Farming historical

Livestock husbandry is not explicitly addressed in the historical concepts of organic farming. Livestock provided manure and was therefore an important link in the crop and soil fertility chain. Livestock played a major role on its own only in biodynamic farming, especially cattle whose organs are described as important catalysts of processes and transmitters of cosmic energies (Steiner, 1929). Nonetheless, even the pioneers of biodynamic farming did not consider livestock husbandry from an ethical or animal welfare point of view. 

Castilla y Leon, and Castilla la Mancha. This part is also the most significant for industrial plants such as biomass crops and oilseed rape. In the southernmost regions of Castilla La Mancha and Catalunya, dry fruit trees and vineyards increase in significance, while the Ebro River delta supports a well-developed rice farming activity. Diffuse pollution originated by pesticides application in the basin has been widely studied [1-3]. A historical pollution from chemical plants manufacturing solvents and chlorinated pesticides in the southern part of the river basin is also well known [4]. Automobile, textile, food, and wood industry as well as mining activities are important in the northern part. 

Human disease associated with eating fish not previously identified with a particular toxin has also been reported. One example is saxitoxin poisoning associated with eating pulfer fish caught in Florida. Another example involves CFP. Ciguatera has not historically been associated with cold-water fish, but Dinubile and Hokama (1995) reported a case of CFP in a woman who had eaten farm-raised salmon.

As a result of their geographical circumstances and these various historical developments, many estuaries appear to be among the most heavily loaded ecosystems in the world in terms of the amount of nitrogen and phosphorus received per unit area (Fig. 5). Even the farm fields of the American corn belt do not receive the fertilization common to many estuaries, and the nutrient inputs to natural terrestrial systems and fresh waters appear to be orders of magnitude lower. There are fewer data available on the inputs of metals and other pollutants to estuaries, but the evidence at hand suggests that the delivery of heavy metals to estuaries may equal or exceed that deposited from the atmosphere on heavily industrialized urban areas and exceed that deposited on rural terrestrial ecosystems by orders of magnitude (Fig. 6). 

Muscle samples from 163 trout were found to contain no detectable residues of veterinary drugs. However, malachite green was detected at 8/tg/kg in one sample. This compound is not licensed for medicinal purposes in fish and has historically been used by the fish farming industry for other purposes. 

Despite society s focus on the marijuana high, cannabis historically has provided many meaningful industrial and medicinal values that are not attributed to its psychoactive effects. Historically, tillage and hand weeding were the main methods of weed control. Since the advent of herbicide use in 1950, essentially all sugarcane in Australia now receives one or more herbicide applications. Virtually all of the crop is produced on family-operated, commercial-scale farms and is processed at cooperative or privately owned mills.
