Farm stays

I regret very much not to be in a position to avail myself of the kind invitation you have extended to me on behalf of yourself and Mr. Lawes. However, I have just returned from a long journey to the southern part of the country and my belated arrival compels me to stay at the farm for the entire season. Moreover, I am involved in an experiment on tobacco which requires regular attendance and a good deal of analysis.

Verification of herd health methods, as well as field work, is done annually by an independent certification agency. The inspector will stay at a farm anywhere from several hours to several days, depending on the size, and audit the operation from bookwork to fieldwork. In this process the inspector is on hand for milking, he observes the crops in the growing season, and he audits the farm plan, herd health records and the checkbook. 

Ernest Rutherford (1871-1937) was born on a farm in New Zealand. In 1895 he placed second in a scholarship competition to attend Cambridge University but was awarded the scholarship when the winner decided to stay home and get married. As a scientist in England, Rutherford did much of the early work on characterizing radioactivity. He named the a and /3 particles and the g ray and coined the term half-life to describe an important attribute of radioactive elements. His experiments on the behavior of a particles striking thin metal foils led him to postulate the nuclear atom. He also invented the name proton for the nucleus of the hydrogen atom. He received the Nobel Prize in chemistry in 1908.

I m only shy around people, not animals. And I used to live on a farm, so I know that when animals are scared or excited, you have to stay calm—even when you don t feel calm—if you want to help them. ... 

Farm subsidies in general can lead to inefficient use of resoirrces, in organic agriculture as in conventional agriculture. In other words, subsidies in one coimtry, by affecting the price level and the quantity of production (number of farmers who can stay in business), affect farmers in other countries. This can distort the tme picture of efficiency in resource use between organic farmers in different countries bad news from an enviromnental perspective.
