Even though dynein, kinesin, and myosin serve similar ATPase-dependent chemomechanical functions and have structural similarities, they do not appear to be related to each other in molecular terms. Their similarity lies in the overall shape of the molecule, which is composed of a pair of globular heads that bind microtubules and a fan-shaped tail piece (not present in myosin) that is suspected to carry the attachment site for membranous vesicles and other cytoplasmic components transported by MT. The cytoplasmic and axonemal dyneins are similar in structure (Hirokawa et al., 1989 Holzbaur and Vallee, 1994). Current studies on mutant phenotypes are likely to lead to a better understanding of the cellular roles of molecular motor proteins and their mechanisms of action (Endow and Titus, 1992). [Pg.17]

Both DDT and chlordan are used in colorless, odorless, deobase-type solvent DDT in 5% solution and chlordan in 2% solution. The oil solvent is used because it is a nonconductor and because experience has shown that the crystals from a film of oil solvent solution adhere more firmly to the surface sprayed. A pressure-type spray tank, either a hand pump or mechanical source of air pressure, is used, with a special nozzle which gives a fan-shaped nonmisting spray. A special dripless valve is used. Several valves and nozzles which meet these requirements are on the market. The appropriate areas are sprayed with this fan-shaped painting spray stream, so that the surface glistens with the wet film but there is not sufficient quantity to run down. Experience has shown that this will leave approximately 200 mg. of DDT per square foot or an equivalent amount of chlordan. This procedure is recommended by the U. S. Public Health Service in its spraying technique for residences and food establishments treated in its program of spraying DDT only for malaria control. It has not as yet recommended chlordan for this use. Specifications for the sprayer nozzles procedure can be obtained from this source. [Pg.29]

Hexagonal mesophases can be recognized by their typical fan-shape texture (Fig. 7a). Lamellar mesophases typically show oily streaks with inserted maltese crosses (Fig. 7b). The latter are due to defects, called confocal domains, that arise from a concentric rearrangement of plane layers. In some lamellar mesophases these defects prevail. Hence no oily streaks occur but maltese crosses are the dominant texture (Fig. 7c). [Pg.125]

The smectic mesophases of the thermotropic liquid crystals show a variety of textures but resemble mainly the fan-shape texture of the lyotropic hexagonal meso-phase. For further reading more comprehensive literature is recommended [11]. [Pg.125]

Alternatively, a fiber can be one member of a group or aggregate, as a fibril is one part of a fiber. Spherulites (Fig. 1. IH), fan-shaped fibrous crusts or rosettes, and the veins depicted in Fig. 1.1A are examples of aggregates created when many crystalline fibers grow in close proximity. During fibrous growth, lateral interference may produce planar but irregular bound-... [Pg.7]

Infiltration anaesthesia is applied fan-shaped, with as few needle punctures as possible, in close proximity of the wound or the skin area to be treated. An aspiration should always take place to avoid intravascular injection. Suitable alternatives are lidocaine (lignocaine) or prilocaine for injection 5-10 mg/ml, with or without adrenaline. When making an incision of an abscess it is sometimes difficult to use a local anaesthetic if there is a pronounced inflammatory reaction, since the effect of the anaesthetic is reduced due to an increased acidity level. While adrenaline reduces bleeding and delays dispersion of the anaesthetic, local anaesthetic/adrenaline combinations are contraindicated for local anaesthesia of digits, on the face or where the skin survival is at risk. [Pg.498]

Japanese twins of quartz have attracted interest since ancient times because they exhibit a remarkably platy V-shape, in contrast to the hexagonal prismatic morphology of coexisting single crystals. Since they grow on substrate, the V-shape was assumed to represent the upper half of an X-shape [12], which implies that the Japanese twins are penetration twins. The platy form of Japanese twins has been explained as being due to preferential growth at a re-entrant corner formed by two individuals. If the platy form is indeed simply due to the re-entrant corner effect, we should expect a variation of forms, from V-shape to fan-shape, as the effect proceeds, as shown in Fig. 10.9. If, however, it represents the upper half of an X-shape, Japanese twins should be penetration twins, not contact twins. [Pg.210]

The ability of the cations [M(CNR)4]+ (M = Rh, Ir) to self-associate is a function of steric crowding in the molecule, and for bulky R groups monomeric species predominate. An estimate has been made of the steric size of isocyanides in terms of fan-shaped angles and as part of this study the structure of RhCl(CNC6H2Bu -2,4,6)3 has been elucidated (126). The structural determinations of a series of dimeric rhodium(I) isocyanide salts have been completed. An eclipsed configuration was found for [Rh2 CN (CH2)3NC)4](BPh4)2 NCMe (42)2 (287), whereas [Rh2(CNPh)8]-... [Pg.248]
