Factorial design of experiments

In order to keep traek of the individual tests, a special naming system is employed. Each factor is assigned a letter, sueh asa,b, or c in the case of a three factor experiment. When the high value of the factor is used, a letter appears in the S5mibol for this experiment, but if the low value is used, unity appears. The letters are simply multiplied togetiier to obtain the symbol designating the experiment. For example, if the high values of variables a and b are used with the low value of c in a three factor experiment, this experiment would be referred to as ab). The multiplication by unity for c is inferred. If, on the other hand, all variables had their respeetive low values, the symbol for this experiment would be (1). [Pg.398]

Experiments should be done in a random order which may be determined by putting 3 slips of paper, each one containing the symbol corresponding to a different experiment, in a hat and then removing the [Pg.398]

Here we are assuming a three factor experiment for which there will be 2 = 8 tests. [Pg.399]

The direct effect of some variable (say variable a) may be found as follows  [Pg.399]

The signs in this and subsequent equations refer to the variation due to the variable in question falling above and below the mean. [Pg.399]

A survey of the published literature indicates that the ratio of the maximum to mean energy dissipation rate in the vessel, Smax/ m can vary substantially but typically in the range 10 to 100 [85]. Recent measurements [100] of the turbulent flow properties with a range of impellers and vessel configurations indicate that the differences between the reported ratios of Smax/Cm re partly due to differences in the geometrical variables. For example, detailed factorial designs of experiments showed significant effects of impeller diameter to tank diameter ratio and off-bottom clearance to impeller diameter ratio on the value of emax/Cm-... [Pg.102]

Because earlier experimental results and data analyses (3-10) had led us to anticipate the inadequacy of the simple approach considered above, we also planned and carried out (2) a second order factorial design of experiments and related data analysis. Mathematical analysis (of the results of 11 experiments) based on the second order model showed that all of these results could be represented satisfactorily by an equation of the form... [Pg.429]

The challenge of monitoring batch processes for deviations was addressed by Gabrielsson et aP" (also taken up by Wong et al. °) with the hydrogenation of nitrobenzene to aniline as a model reaction. The study followed a factorial design of experiments. Process deviations could only be detected when the UV spectroscopic data set and the process data set were used in a combined manner, not seperately. [Pg.96]

Designing a stability study is based on a factorial design of experiments where a systemic procedure is used to determine the effect on the response variable of various factors and factor combinations. A linear model is used to represent the relationship between the factors and factor combinations with the response variable. Once the experimental design is established, the assays are conducted and stability data are saved to finally estimate the shelf life period. [Pg.590]

Factorial design of experiments, combined with statistical methods of data analysis, offers wider and more differentiated information on the system, while conclusions are of greater usability. The results of all the eight runs in the analyzed example serve for determining the factor effects, with seven trials being independent possibilities of testing the effects and one serving for their comparison with the chosen fixed values. Three out of seven independently determined factor effects serve for... [Pg.163]

Three operating variables have been analyzed hydrogen partial pressure, temperature and reaction time. A factorial design of experiments was used to choose the conditions of each run. The levels of the three factors used during the runs are shown in Table I In the same table we can see the expressions employed to normalize the factors. [Pg.1543]

The main goal is to design minimum number of experiments needed for the selection of variables influencing catalytic properties. The effect of experimental conditions on the parameters used for evaluating the performance using the minimum number of experiments (runs) was proposed using a full factorial design of experiments. [Pg.277]

In order to evaluate the supply chain performance and to identify strategies for dealing with late deliveries, a set of experiments are conducted. A full factorial design of experiments is constructed for three experimental factors and one policy variable (Table 13.2). The experimental factors are (1) a level of delivery xmcertainty (2) spot market premium and (3) a ratio between the spot market premium and the late delivery penalty. The policy variable is the expected delivery lateness threshold 8 at which the purchasing at the spot market is triggered. [Pg.255]

The model is subjected to an MRE analysis using the response surface based optimisation developed by the authors Munck et al. CNC milling operations are carried ont on mild steel work-pieces to get machined snrfaces for different combinations of spindle speed, feed rate and depth of cnt. The generated snrfaces are measnred nsing the Talysnrf instrnment and fnrther processed to get fractal dimension (D). The experimental resnlts are nsed to develop the prediction model nsing artificial nenral networks to model fractal dimension. For ANN, fnll factorial design of experiments is considered and the experimental resnlts are presented in Table 5.4 (Sahoo et ah, 2008). [Pg.189]
