There is one more gluey story that merits telling. It s all about Spencer F. Silver. Granted, his name may not be a household word, but one of his inventions certainly is Post-It notes. In 1998 the American Chemical Society presented its award for creative innovation to Silver, 3M s chief scientist, for inventing a glue that sticks when you want it to and releases when you want it to. And what a curious history this substance has. [Pg.224]

Analysis of the compound for platinum is accomplished gravimetrically by reduction of a known weight of the anhydrous salt to metallic platinum with formic acid.3 For the determination of chloride, 0.3 g. of the anhydrous salt is dissolved in 40 ml. of distilled water containing 250 mg. of hydrazine sulfate the solution is boiled gently until platinum metal is formed and coagulated. Then, without removal of the platinum, the solution is made 1 f in nitric acid and is titrated potentiometrically with standard 0.2 F silver nitrate solution. Anal. Calcd. for Na2PtCl6 Pt, 42.99 Cl, 46.88. Found Pt, 42.78 Cl, 46.73. [Pg.175]

The design of the cells, the preparations of the silver -f- silver bromide electrodes (of the thermal type), and the hydrogen electrodes, have been described elsewhere (21,22). The bias potential of the silver-silver bromide electrodes was always within 0.05 mV. [Pg.281]

We have described the series of reactions that occurs when solid AgN03 is added slowly to a solution that is 0.0010 M in C1-, Br-, and f-. Silver iodide begins to precipitate first 99.955% of the precipitates before any solid AgBr is formed. Silver bromide begins to... [Pg.836]
