Applications. Among the P—O- and P—N-substituted polymers, the fluoroalkoxy- and aryloxy-substituted polymers have so far shown the greatest commercial promise (14—16). Both poly[bis(2,2,2-trifluoroethoxy)phosphazene] [27290-40-0] and poly(diphenoxyphosphazene) [28212-48-8] are microcrystalline, thermoplastic polymers. However, when the substituent symmetry is dismpted with a randomly placed second substituent of different length, the polymers become amorphous and serve as good elastomers. Following initial development of the fluorophosphazene elastomers by the Firestone Tire and Rubber Co., both the fluoroalkoxy (EYPEL-F) and aryloxy (EYPEL-A) elastomers were manufactured by the Ethyl Corp. in the United States from the mid-1980s until 1993 (see ELASTOLffiRS,SYNTHETic-PHOSPHAZENEs). [Pg.257]

Elastomers formed using alkoxide salts of trifluoroethanol and higher fluoroalcohols have been found to have an interesting range of thermal and fluid resistance. These materials were developed under U.S. Army sponsorship, and initially commercialized by Firestone using the name PNF, later sold by Ethyl Corp. as EYPEL-F elastomer. ASTM has reserved the designation FZ for elastomers of this class which have the nominal stmcture given as (4). [Pg.525]

Another elastomer to find use is the substitution product of phenol and -ethylphenol along with an aHylic monomer to provide cross-link sites (5). This is trademarked EYPEL-A elastomer [66805-77-4] by Ethyl Corp., and designated PZ by ASTM. The substitution ratio is roughly 52 mol % phenol, 43% j )-ethylphenol, and 5% aHylic substituent. [Pg.526]

The rubber has a very low of -68°C, excellent hydrolytic stability and excellent resistance to ozone, solvents and acids. In addition the rubber does not bum even in an oxidising atmosphere. Although its properties are virtually unchanged in the range -75 to + 120°C it does not possess the heat resistance of other fluoroelastomers. This polymer was marketed by Firestone in the mid-1970s as PNF rubber, but in 1983 the Ethyl Corporation obtained exclusive rights to the Firestone patents and the polymer is now marketed as Eypel F. [Pg.383]

Among these copolymers, the two structures III and IV are of particular interest. They have been commercially available for a limited period of time from the Ethyl Corporation and Atochem Societies under the trademarks EYPEL A and ORGAFLEX A, respectively. Polymer III is more elastomeric (Tg=-18 °C [10]) than polymer IV (T =-5 °C [584]). [Pg.201]

Continued commercial interest in poly(phosphazenes) is demonstrated by extensive patent activity and related applications oriented publications (some of which have been noted above). Fire retardency is an ongoing theme in cyclo-and linear phosphazene applications (see section 3). Aryloxy phosphazenes, including a commercial product, Eypel A, have been utilized for components for fire resistance in foam cushioning, rocket motor insulation and electrical wire coating . Alkoxy phosphazene polymers and copolymers impart antistatic properties to silver halide based... [Pg.389]

MAJOR APPLICATIONS Developmental quantities of PNF and EYPEL-F and other elastomers were manufactured in quantity for high-performance seals, collapsible storage tanks, O-rings, and vibration shock absorption mounts in military and other devices. The service life of these items is claimed to be relatively long and reliable. [Pg.750]
