Shortly before 2.47 am instmctions from the shift manager were passed via Traffic Control to a loco driver and shunter to remove the full torpedo ladle from the vicinity of the furnace. Traffic personnel were made aware that water was mnning into the torpedo. As the loco was coupled to the ladle, water was seen to be coming from the iron runner. An explosion occurred as the ladle was moved. An eye witness identified the throat of the ladle as the seat of the explosion. The incident was timed at 2.47 am. 

This is an excerpt from Mark Twain s short story Roughing It. Twain gives an eye-witness account of the operation of The Pony Express, the West s first mail system. 

Herodotus (484r-425 B.C.) said in his History that he did not know of any islands called die Cassiterides whence the tin comes which we use.. . . Though I have taken great pains, I have never been able to get an assurance from an eye-witness that there is any sea on the further side of Europe. Nevertheless, tin and amber do certainly come to us from the ends of the earth (67). 

In light of this eye witness report, we must modify the cell-protein axiom to read there are no cells without proteins and there are no proteins without nuclear material. Nuclear material was first and all the structural developments and inventions had to be made in the nucleic acid language, and that means it was made without a plan to create a specific activity but rather with enough variety that specific activities would arise among others. In 1983, as a counter-measure against the ongoing successes of revisionists, a compilation was published, principally the work of French and German establishment historians.42 While this book ridiculed and insulted revisionists and cast political aspersions against them, and at the same time was intended to refute their claims, it does neither address any particular revisionist argument, nor are any revisionist publications quoted or authors named, so that it is impossible to the reader of this book to verify the polemic accusations made against the revisionists. This book also repeats the mistake often emphasized by revisionists quotations from eye-witness testimony and passages from documents were taken out of context and pasted uncritically into a predetermined historical schema.

If one considers all these factors and combines them with studies on the manipulability of human memory, such as the one recently published by Prof. Loftus in a leading scientific journal,24 then one cannot help but conclude that there is in fact no eye witness testimony less reliable than those...

Forensic chemistry is concerned with the application of the principles of chemistry and related sciences to the examination of physical evidence collected at scenes of crimes, e.g. blood stains, paint fragments, bomb residue, clothes, drug samples and hair. The samples could provide conclusive evidence linking a suspect to a crime. Results from chemical analysis are usually conclusive and can be used to support eye witness testimony especially when trials take place many months or even years after the offence. 

The following is an eye-witness account [2191a] from Naoji Uezono, a printer working for Unit 731, of a maruta riot in Block 8 of Pingfan Station, Manchuria, about two months before the end of the war ...

At the inquest eye witnesses reported that failure seemed to initiate in the roof where there was a great deal of snow which seemed to be concentrated along one side of the span. A number of witnesses said that they had heard creaks and groans coming from the roof on occasions before the day of the collapse and it was reported that some residents had been so concerned over the safety of the structure that they had refused to enter the arena. 

As for specific dumping sites, information about them is not as inaccessible. It can be found, for instance, on navigation maps where these sites were ciphered as "dumps of explosive substances . For example, two such sites, mentioned by eye-witnesses, were indicated on a map of the White Sea a site in the Kara Sea, near the northern part of Novaya Zemlya, and a site near the Povorotnyy Cape in the Sea of Japan. In total, there are no less than 12 large sea areas, although there are hundreds of specific sites [9]. 

According to eye-witnesses, the ships in the port received a cargo of chemical weapons, the holds were sealed with concrete, the hatches were welded up, and the... 

There is no shortage of Antarctic adventure stories such as the reports by Siple (1931,1936) about his participation in Byrd s two expeditions to Antarctica, the excellent account of life at Ellsworth Station during the IGY by Behrendt (1998), and the story by Dewart (1989) of how in 1960 he spent 1 year with the Russians at the Mimyy research station. Another book by a geologist is the account by Doumani (1999) of the trials and tribulations of scientists and military personnel who were trying to live and work together in Antarctica from 1958 to 1965. In addition, Neider (1974) published an astute account of life in McMurdo Station during the austral summer of 1970/71 that included a helicopter crash near the summit of Mt. Erebus. Other eye-witness accounts of travel to and within Antarctica were published by Neider (1972), Parfit (1985), and Pyne (1986). 

Suggestibility. Stndies of eye witness testimony have shown that we easily, and unknowingly, adjust our memories to accord with new information and become convinced that our new memories are veridical. An example would be unintentionally convincing your patient that they had had an angiogram, even though they did not.

The other feature of the asylum grounds that is emphasized in visual representations, is the rurality of the sites, both in terms of location and function. In fact, one of the interesting observations to note from representations of Yarra Bend and Kew is that the proximity to the city or suburbs is never referenced, despite the fact that eye witness accounts indicate that the nearby city and suburbs could be clearly seen in 1858 (Report from the Select Committee upon the Lunatic Asylum, 1858 12). Further, representations of the asylum as a rural retreat, persisted well into the 20th century, even when the sites were abutted by suburbs. An example of this is the 1920 postcard of the road through Yarra Bend that crossed the Yarra River to Kew, Track to the Asylum which retains the device of the picturesque and rural in both visual and verbal language (Fig. 80.9).
