Extrusion. The main applications of this method include the production of film, sheet, pipe, and tubing. PB is usually extruded by using the same equipment (single- cu twin-screw extruders) as that used foi PP and HDPE, at melt and die temperatures of 170- 190°C. PMP is processed on extruders with a high length-to-diameter ratio at temperatures of 240-300°C.

A film or sheet extrusion line consists of an extruder, film or sheet die, cooling system, take-off system, wind-up system, and auxiliary equipment such as film gauging systems, surface treatment, and slitters. Single-screw extruders with relatively long barrels (L/D = 27 to 33 1) are used for most resins, but polyvinyl chloride powders are often processed with twin-screw extruders. As shown in Table 5.10, extruder size is matched to the die width. 

Given that small working mass is a more economical means of reactive extrusion, the distinction between different types of extrusion equipment branches off into a whole host of processing attributes. Because of increasing trends in the late 1990s to replace single extruders by twin-screw extruders, our attention is now directed at twin-screw methodology to modify and reinforce polypropylene resins into a wide spectrum of composite materials. 

In the extrusion process, a polymer melt is pumped through a shaping die and formed into a profile which can be, for example, a plate, a film, or a tube (Osswald and Herndndez-Ortiz, 2006). For this purpose, ram and screw extruders are used. The ram extruder uses a positive displacement pump based on pressure. In this process, the volume is reduced, the fluid is moved from one point to another and the pressure rises. A screw extruder is a viscosity pump based on the pressure gradient and fluid deformation. Currently, single-screw extruders are the most common equipment used in the polymer industries. Twin-screw extruders are widely used as mixing and compounding devices.
