Feed paddles came into usage around 1930 (Fig. 36). Spiral-shaped in-feed rolls were invented for extrusion machines in the fine and advanced ceramics fields. (Fig. 37).

Directed-energy-deposition machines melt material with a laser or other energy source as material is being deposited. These machines work similarly to material-extrusion machines except that, instead of melting the material with a nozzle, the wire or powder feed material is melted as it is being deposited onto a part (Figure 4). 

Many extruder manufacturers now produce dump extruders which are fitted beneath the discharge door of an internal mixer and receive into their feed hopper the full charge of the mixer. The speed of extrusion of the machine is governed by a series of sensors in the feed-hopper, to ensure that the process is continuous and that the screw will not be starved of compound, thus ensuring a continuous production of the mixed rubber compound. Product from such a machine can be slab or pellets. 

These machines produce low pressure compaction and extrusion of moist material by catching it in the nip between a moving bar or wiper and a mesh screen or perforated plate. The granularity of the product depends on the moisture content of the feed. Low moisture produces material of a crumbly...
