It is noteworthy, however, that traces of sulfur can have beneficial effects on the anti-wear resistance of fuel injection pumps. It is thus undesirable to reduce the sulfur content to extremely low values unless additives having lubricating qualities are added. Independently from total sulfur content, the presence of mercaptans that are particularly aggressive towards certain metal or synthetic parts is strictly controlled. The mercaptan content is thereby limited to 0.002% (20 ppm) maximum. The analysis is performed chemically in accordance to the NF M 07-022 or ASTM D 3227 procedures. [Pg.251]

Furfuryl acetate. Reflux a mixture of 39 2 g. (34-8 ml.) of redistilled furfuryl alcohol, 48 g. of glacial acetic acid, 150 ml. of benzene and 20 g. of Zeo-Karb 225/H in a 500 ml. bolt-head flask, using the apparatus described under iaoPropyl Lactate. After 3 hours, when the rate of collection of water in the water separator is extremely slow, allow to cool, separate the resin by suction filtration, and wash it with three 15 ml. portions of benzene. Remove the benzene, etc., from the combined filtrate and washings under reduced pressure (water pump) and then collect the crude ester at 74-90°/10 mm. a small sohd residue remains in the flask. Redistil the crude ester from a Claisen flask with fractionating side arm pure furfuryl acetate passes over at 79-80°/17 mm. The yield is 14 -5 g. [Pg.388]

Optimum Pressure Drop. For most heat exchangers there is an optimum pressure drop. This results from the balance of capital costs against the pumping (or compression) costs. A common prejudice is that the power costs are trivial compared to the capital costs. The total cost curve is fairly flat within 50% of the optimum (see Fig. lb), but the incremental costs of power are roughly one third of those for capital on an aimualized basis. This simple relationship can be extremely useful in quick design checks. [Pg.89]

In extremely cold environments, engines can quickly become difficult, sometimes nearly impossible, to start. If ordinary gasoline- or diesel-oil-fired heaters are used, the coolant circulation pump, air fan, etc, must be powered from the vehicle s batteries, thus curtailing the time the system can be used, especially at very low temperatures when it is needed the most. By adding PbTe thermoelectrics to such heater systems, about 2% of their thermal output can be turned into electricity to mn the heater s electronics, fuel pump, combustion fan, and coolant circulation pump, with stiH sufficient power left over to keep the vehicle s battery fliUy charged. In some places and under certain conditions, freshwater can be obtained more cheaply by desalination of seawater than by transporting water. This is tme when all the costs of extremely large monetary investments in dams, reservoirs, conduits, and pumps to move the water are considered. Before the rapid escalation of fuel costs between 1973 and 1980, the cost of desalination of seawater to adequately supply southern California would have been less than that of transport to the Peripheral Canal. This would have been the case even if there were an unlimited supply of water in the mountains of northern California, a condition that does not appear to exist. It has been shown that before 1973 a seacoast town could have been suppHed with 7-12 x lO" /d of freshwater more cheaply by desalination than by damming and piping water a distance of >160 km km (7). Indeed, the 1987—1992 drought in California has compelled the city of Santa Barbara to constmct a water desalination plant, and a 76,000-m /d plant is plaimed for the western coast of Florida (8). [Pg.236]

The large variety of displacement-type flmd-transport devices makes it difficult to list characteristics common to each. However, for most types it is correct to state that (1) they are adaptable to high-pressure operation, (2) the flow rate through the pump is variable (auxiliary damping systems may be employed to reduce the magnitude of pressure pulsation and flow variation), (3) mechanical considerations limit maximum throughputs, and (4) the devices are capable of efficient performance at extremely low-volume throughput rates. [Pg.900]

Close-Coupled Pumps (Fig. 10-38) Pumps equipped with a built-in electric motor or sometimes steam-turbine-driven (i.e., with pump impeller and driver on the same shaft) are known as close-coupled pumps. Such units are extremely compact and are suitable for a variety of services for which standard iron and bronze materials are satisfactory. They are available in capacities up to about 450 mVh (2000 gal/min) for heads up to about 73 m (240 ft). Two-stage units in the smaller sizes are available for heads to around 150 m (500 ft). [Pg.907]
