Transition Joints. Use of explosion-clad transition joints avoids the limitations involved in joining two incompatible materials by bolting or riveting. Many transition joints can be cut from a single large-area flat-plate clad and deflvered to limit the temperature at the bond interface so as to avoid undesirable diffusion. Conventional welding practices may be used for both similar metal welds. 

The electrolytic cells shown ia Figures 2—7 represent both monopolar and bipolar types. The Chemetics chlorate cell (Fig. 2) contains bipolar anode/cathode assembhes. The cathodes are Stahrmet, a registered trademark of Chemetics International Co., and the anodes are titanium [7440-32-6] Ti, coated either with mthenium dioxide [12036-10-17, RUO2, or platinum [7440-06-4] Pt—indium [7439-88-5] Ir (see Metal anodes). Anodes and cathodes are joined to carrier plates of explosion-bonded titanium and Stahrmet, respectively. Several individual cells electrically connected in series are associated with one reaction vessel. 

From 1941 until he came to Picatinny Arsenal, Dr. Fedoroff worked in private industry in the field of explosives and propellants. He joined the staff of the Picatinny Arsenal Technical Division as a research chemist in 1946, and remained until his retirement in 1961. In addition to the Encyclopedia, his major publications include A Manual for Explosives Laboratories , 4 volumes... 

Transition joints are used to join dissimilar metals where flanged, screwed, or threaded connections are not practical. They are used when fusion welding of two dissimilar metals forms interfaces that are deficient in mechanical strength and the ability to keep the system leak-tight. Transition joints consist of a bimetallic composite, a stainless steel, and a particular kind of aluminum bonded together by some proprietary process. Some of the types in use throughout the cryogenic industry are friction- or inertia-welded bond, roll-bonded joint, explosion-bonded joint, and braze-bonded joint. 

During steel casting, a fire resulted which damaged the water cooling system. A water stream joined the molten iron runner to result in an explosion... 

Implosion and explosion, Thanatos, the neutron star, and Eros, the supernova, seem to join their eternal forces, using invisible neutrinos as mediators. 

Gunpowder was the primary explosive used for almost one thousand years. In 1846, the Italian chemist Ascanio Sobrero (1812-1888) first prepared nitroglycerin, but it was twenty years before Alfred Nobel (1833-1896) developed its use commercially. Nobel was bom in Stockholm, Sweden, where his father, Immanuel Nobel (1801-1872), ran a heavy constmction company. When Alfred was four, his father s company went bankrupt and Immanuel left for St. Petersburg, Russia, to start over. Immanuel rebuilt a successful business in Russia, in part due to his ability to develop and sell mines to the Russian Navy for use in the Crimean War. Alfred and the rest of his family joined his father in Russia when he was nine, and Alfred received an excellent education with private tutors. He studied in the United States and Paris where he met Sobrero. Nobel studied... 

Fuze, PD M56. It is a supersensitive type used with 37-mm HE shells. The fuze consists of the following parts (See Fig 1-77), joined by threads a nose (B), a head assembly (F) snd body (L), The body holds the booster charge (M) and an interrupter (N) which contains a part of the explosive train connecting the booster with the detonator (H), which is located in its assembly (G) screwed into recess of head assembly (F). 

The principle embodied in Mark 29 Anti-torpedo Device was as follows Two explosive streamers and a third streamer contg audio pickups sensitive to vibrations from the torpedo were to be trailed by a faired (joined so that external surfaces blend smoothly) cable attached to a paravane (See Note). When a torpedo passed over or under the detector streamer, one of the explosive streamers would be fired automatically to destroy the torpedo. The 2nd streamer would then be thrown automatically into the firing circle in readiness for a 2nd attack (Ref 2)... 

After his travels, he joined his father s business and worked developing mines, torpedoes, explosives, and other war matenals for the Russian czar. The Nobel factory was financially successful until the end of the Crimean War when it fell into bankruptcy. Alfred then went into business with his brother manufacturing drilling tools for oilfields. 

In each half-space we take Sedov s solution, which satisfies the condition of zero velocity at the coordinate origin, and impose on them the condition of pressure equality. Since the law of pressure decay with time in a strong explosion is independent of the gas density (in the plane case this law is p this joining of the two solutions is possible. At equal pressures,... 

The breadth and especially the unifying power of the concept became progressively more and more apparent, so that recent years have seen an explosive growth as measured by the increasing number of laboratories that join the field and whose work has been reported in a vast range of publications, books, journals, meetings and symposia (for a selection see Appendix).
