Sprinkler systems are an effective way to contain fires. The system consists of an array of sprinkler heads connected to a water supply. The heads are mounted in a high location (usually near ceilings) and disperse a fine spray of water over an area when activated. The heads are activated by a variety of methods. A common approach activates the heads individually by the melting of a fusible link holding a plug in the head assembly. Once activated, the sprinklers cannot be turned off unless the main water supply is stopped. This approach is called a wet pipe system. These systems are used for storage areas, laboratories, control rooms, and small pilot areas. Another approach activates the entire sprinkler array from a common control point. The control point is connected to an array of heat and/or smoke detectors that start the sprinklers when an abnormal condition is detected. Fuze, PD M56. It is a supersensitive type used with 37-mm HE shells. The fuze consists of the following parts (See Fig 1-77), joined by threads a nose (B), a head assembly (F) snd body (L), The body holds the booster charge (M) and an interrupter (N) which contains a part of the explosive train connecting the booster with the detonator (H), which is located in its assembly (G) screwed into recess of head assembly (F).

Production of die casting molds for the fuze body and head assemblies are beyond the scope of the small shop. These pieces can be produced as oversized sand castings machined to finished size.

DS2, 1 1/2 Quart (including ABC-M11). The Mil is used to decontaminate small areas that soldiers must touch. It is a steel container with an aluminum spray-head assembly and a nitrogen gas cylinder that provides the pressure. It is filled with 1-1/3 quarts of DS2, which is sufficient to cover 135 square feet. The ABC-M11 is an equipment-mounted, standard U.S. Army decontaminating apparatus used for operator spray-down decontamination. The item is man-portable (weight of approximately 5 pounds). The ABC-M11 has been replaced by the M13.

The instrumental modifications required are minimal. Commercially available analytical reciprocating pumps can be readily modified (at cost) with preparative head assemblies which provide solvent delivery capacity of up to 100 ml min. If ultraviolet detection is being used then due to its sensitivity a stream splitter is located at the column outlet, normally with a 5 10% split ratio. The detector flow can be recombined with the major flow stream before passage to the fraction collector. Pure samples can be obtained by collection of suitable fraction cuts, which can be checked by analytical LC before bulking. RI detection is popular in preparative work as the detector has adequate sensitivity and is universal in application.
