I express my gratitude, the profound admiration and respect for the thousand and thousand of professors, specialists, experts, researchers, scientists from chemical companies, universities and research centres, who with their imagination, creativity and serious research played a decisive role in the development of the polyol field for polyurethanes. 

Walter Kohn has been a great help to many scientists over many years, an expert consultant and helpmate and a fine, unobtrusive, even-handed host of good meetings in lovely places. We thank him. In recent years I have discussed with him (among other things), circulant orbitals, the monotonic density theorem, and the information theory point of view on what constitutes an atom in a molecule, the latter during a stolen few minutes in a Stockholm hotel in December of 1999 [6]. Walter may or may not like chemistry [7], and he claims not to have studied chemistry in the university. But what does one call a great teacher of chemical principles I would say, CHEMIST, full caps.

Pickar When I was at GE and wanted to evaluate a program, I would call in the expert professors from MIT and Caltech, who would advise me on whether these programs were really what my scientists told me they were. I worked with about 20 professors at various times over the years. We have heard it from many people today—big companies are much better integrated with universities than... 

A peer review panel was assembled for chlorobenzene. The panel consisted of the following members Dr. David Jollow, Professor in the Department of Pharmacology, Medical University of South Carolina, Charleston, South Carolina Dr. Henry Peters, Professor in the Department of Neurology, University of Wisconsin Clinical Science Center, Madison, Wisconsin Dr. Jay B. Silkworth, Research Scientist, Wadsworth Center Labs, New York Department of Health, Albany, New York Dr. Frank Lu, Private Toxicology Consultant. Miami, Florida Dr. James Pollard, Private Consultant, Las Vegas, Nevada. These experts collectively have knowledge of chlorobenzene s physical and chemical properties, toxicokinetics, key health end points, mechanisms of action, human and animal exposure, and quantification of risk to humans. All reviewers were selected in conformity with the conditions for peer review specified in Section 104(i)(13) of the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act, as amended. 

Dr. Theo Colborn is a scientist and one of the world s leading experts on endocrine disrupters. Her work has prompted the enactment of new laws around the world (including Senate Bill 5 1391.-"Child, Worker, and Consumer-Safe Chemicals Act of 2005") and redirected the research of government and academia. She s a professor of zoology at the University of Florida, Gainesville, and the coauthor of Our Stolen Future. 

Those consequences are now with us. Universities have been obliged to seek funds from industry, university researchers have been required to obtain money from industry, and commercial firms conduct their own vast programmes. The result is that it is now quite difficult to find wholly independent scientists many of the most expert scientists in any field are funded by an interested party in that field. Where does one then go for independent advice Even freedom to publish may be constrained or delayed, to preserve commercial advantage for the funder. 

Back again in Cincinnati, Elwood Brooks, Marshall Wilson, and graduate students Pat Hutchins, Mark Guttaduaro, and Sheela Venkitachalam contributed additional spectra for the book, as did David Watt of the University of Kentucky. But there are two major contributors of example spectra who deserve special thanks. Sadder Research Laboratories (Division of Bio-Rad Laboratories, Inc.), through staff scientist Marie Scandone, provided many of the one-dimensional H and L1C spectra. And David Lankin, a graduate of this department and currently a research scientist and NMR expert at Searle, provided the bulk of the special 2D and related spectra in Chapters 12 and 13, with the help of Geoffrey Cordell of the University of Illinois School of Pharmacy.
