Exercise high-sensitivity

An international intercomparison exercise in the determination of microcystin, carried out by using the most common methods (LC/DAD, ELISA and LC/MS) indicated that LC/DAD is affected by lower precision [234], while the coupling of the LC technique with ELISA permit the achievement of high sensitivity and specificity in the determination of microcystins and nodularin [235] without the need of pre-concentration the method meets the World Health Organization guidelines (1 pg L ). The combination of ELISA characterization and LC analysis with fluorescence, UV, and tandem MS detections, allowed the first identification of cylindrospermopsin, an algal toxin that caused the poisoning of up to 148 persons in Australia [236],... [Pg.553]

The contribution of water absorption in solution spectra can be more than 99% of the total signal. The technological sophistication and high sensitivity of modem FTIR instruments make it possible to extract protein spectra from solution data however extreme care must be exercised to insure accuracy. Frequently FTIR data processing is not done with sufficient rigor, and hence flawed analyses have appeared in print. As a part of this work, a careful exploration of the various aspects of data collection, spectral processing, and structural analysis was performed in order to develop a reproducible and reliable protocol. The complete protocol is presented in the following sections. [Pg.476]

A salt aerosol is generated in an enclosure, usually up to a concentration of 13 mg m 3, with a particle mass median diameter of 0.3 to 1.3 pm, depending on the aerosol generator used. The subject dons the respirator, enters the enclosure and performs a set of simple exercises while the salt concentration inside and outside the respirator are measured by flame photometry. The Dstl, Porton Down uses a specially built high-sensitivity flame photometer to measure very low salt concentrations (and hence to confirm very high PFs). [Pg.169]

Exercise The analytical procedure is identical to that described in Section 6.5. However, as the manifold here is designed for high-sensitivity measurements of phosphate, large sample volumes are injected. Therefore, a manifold such as that shown in Fig. 63a cannot be used, as this would result in insufficient mixing and formation of double peaks (see Fig. 6.6). ... [Pg.305]

The ventricular ejection fraction can be determined using radiotracers. The activity in the ventricle is proportional to the amount of blood. Using a tracer that remains in the blood circulation and a y-camera with a high-sensitivity collimator, the ejection fraction can be determined. Tc-labeled red cells provide a suitable tracer for this purpose. The ejection fraction of the left ventricle is normally >50% and this is increased during exercise. A decreased ejection fraction of the left ventricle during exercise is evidence of coronary disease. An abnormal ejection fraction of the right ventricle indicates a pulmonary disorder. [Pg.4169]

Rink acid resin is highly sensitive to acid. Great care must be exercised not to introduce acid during the synthesis to prevent premature cleavage. [Pg.212]

Spectral techniques were used to identify the molecule in Exercise 21-5 in a variety of animals. It was found that the urine of carnivores, such as lions, tigers, and raccoons, contains up to 3000 times as much of this amine as herbivores. Studies on potential prey of carnivores have shown that they have evolved highly sensitive olfactory receptors to detect the chemical and elicit an innate scurrying response. [Pg.942]
