In other cyclisations to functionalised oxepanes, Rychnovsky and Dahanukar have shown that the epoxide 36 cyclises with BF3 etherate and TMSCN to form the oxepane 37 as single product <96TL339>, and Evans and Roseman have prepared a series of cyclic ethers by radical cyclisation of the acylselenides 38 (Scheme 8) <96JOC2252>. The major product was always the cw-isomer and the best yields were obtained with (TMSjaSiH.

A major contribution of the free-radical scavenging activity in blood plasma is attributable to the macro-molecular proteins (Wayner et al., 1985) of which albumin is a primary component and trapping agertt (Holt et al., 1984). Serum sulphydryl levels, primarily albumin-related, are decreased in subjects with rheumatoid complicated coalworkers pneumoconiosis, indicative of exacerbated inflammatory R.OM production (Thomas and Evans, 1975). Experimental asbestos inhalation in rats leads to an adaptive but evidendy insufficient response by an increase in endogenous antioxidant enzymes (Janssen etal., 1990). Protection of the vascular endothelium against iron-mediated ROM generation and injury is afforded by the iron sequestiant protein ferritin (Balia et al., 1992).

The stereoselectivities in this reaction are governed by steric interactions in the formation of metallacyclobutane 60 (35). Of two possible intermediates (Fig. 5), 61 suffers from steric interactions between the ligand and the ester functionality. Avoidance of these interactions and minimization of 1,2-interaction in the metallacyclobutane leads to the formation of the observed major enantiomer and dias-tereomer (trans). The model suggests that increased diastereoselectivity should be observed with increasing steric bulk of the diazoester, a relationship that has already been established as discussed (cf. Eqs. 24 and 26). It is interesting to note that this model loosely corresponds to the stereochemical model proposed by Aratani for the Sumitomo cyclopropanation with one important difference the Aratani model is based on a tetrahedral metal while the Evans-Woerpel model is predicated on square-planar copper. Applying the Aratani model to the Evans ligand would predict formation of the opposite enantiomer as the major product (35).

Present M sbauer Studies of Natural Pyroxenes and Olivines. Table IX gives the major element chemical compositions of the silicate minerals examined in this study. Table X compares the Mossbauer parameters of these minerals, while Figures 9-13 show representative Mossbauer spectra. Fayalite (Figure 9) is the only olivine in this group. The two lines are, however, somewhat broadened (0.35 and 0.39 mm./ sec.) compared with the width of natural iron foil lines observed with our source (0.24 mm./sec.) and suggest the near coincidence of two quadrupole-split doublets resulting from Mi and M2 sites. Analysis of this "two-line spectrum into a four-line spectrum in the manner described by Evans et al (11) could possibly yield parameters for the two iron sites, but this was not undertaken since both lines appear symmetric. The "two-line quadrupole splitting of 2.78 mm./sec. is somewhat smaller...

The breakthrough was achieved by D. A. Evans and coworkers " , who demonstrated that aryldimethylphosphine-borane complexes 195 are easily deprotonated by i-BuLi/(—)-sparteine (11), furnishing efficient enantiotopic selection between the methyl groups (equation 45). The intermediate lithium compound 196 was added to benzophenone (to give alcohols 197) or oxidatively coupled to furnish bisphosphines 198 with high ee. The major amount of the minor diastereomer epi-196 is removed as separable meso- 9. ...
