Directive 2002/72/EC includes a list of additives that are currently regulated at EU level. Those additives not on the EU list, but currently approved under national legislation, can continue to be used imtil the end of 2006. By then, petitions must have been submitted to the European Food Safety Authority and accepted, if the use of these substances is to continue. The legislation was recently summarised in a Rapra paper at an Addcon World conference. The paper includes several lists of permitted additives. [Pg.191]

Preservatives are one of the 26 major additives categories that are used in the food processing. To ensure that preservatives really do help make foodstuffs safer, their use is subject to premarket safety assessment and authorization procedures. At the European level, the bodies responsible for the safety assessment, authorization, control, and labeling of preservatives and other additives are the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and the European Commission Parliament and Council. At the international level, there is a Joint Expert Committee from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO) Joint Expert Committee for Food Additives (JECFA) [2]. [Pg.168]

Concretely, the Regulation 1924/2006 will have a great impact on the number of products bearing a claim. We have analyzed European Authority of Food Safety (EPS A) opinions on plant extracts and phytochemicals, including phenolic compotmds, since they can provide lessons for the development of functional foods all over the world. [Pg.2492]
