In 1919, Huldschinski (8) realized that uv light cured rickets and impacted on its etiology. The uv light and codHver oil were found to be usehil in the treatment of the disease, and irradiation of food produced the same effect as irradiation of the animal. The link between irradiation and plant materials led to the conclusion that ergosterol was an antirachitic substance, and an extensive effort was made to characterize the chemistry of irradiated ergosterol. [Pg.125]

MS probably has a genetic component there is a 5% risk for family members of MS patients. Monozygotic twins, who share the same genetic material, are at highest risk, with a 25% to 30% concordance rate.4 However, a straightforward inheritance pattern cannot fully explain the etiology of MS, because only a small proportion of patients have a known family member with MS.4... [Pg.432]

The federal requirements [139] state no person shah knowingly transport, carry or convey hquid nitroglycerin, fulminate in bulk in dry condition, or other similarly dangerous explosives, radioactive materials, or etiologic agents on or in any car or vehicle of any description operated in the transportation of passengers or... [Pg.266]

Alternative hypotheses to fibrous materials exposure for induction might well be entertained in view of the possibilities of idiopathic etiology of childhood mesothelioma, the latency of onset, difficulty of accurate diagnosis, and uncommon occurrence of mesotheliomas in occupational situations, much less in the general population except in the dusty areas of Turkey. [Pg.136]

Each chapter begins with a review of the status of knowledge about the etiology, course, biology, and genetics of the disorders to be treated. These sections alone would make the book useful to residents or past-residents reviewing material before taking their psychiatric boards. [Pg.4]

Occasionally, an abnormally intense anterior segment inflammatory reaction occurs within the first 5 days after cataract extraction and can be characterized according to etiology as endophthalmitis, toxic iritis, or aseptic iritis. Endophthalmitis is discussed later in the chapter. Toxic iritis is usually produced by implanned intraocular introduction of drugs or chemicals acute aseptic hitis is caused by surgical trauma to the iris or ciliary body or (occasionally) by particulate foreign material inadvertently introduced at the time of surgery. [Pg.602]
