Most are very sparingly soluble in water note however that methyl formate, methyl oxalate, methyl succinate, methyl and ethyl tartrate, methyl and ethyl citrate are soluble in water. [Pg.355]

Triethyl citrate (ethyl citrate) n. (C2H5OO CCH2)2C(0H)C00C2H5. An ester of citric acid, used as a plasticizer for many thermoplastics including vinyls, cellulosics, and polystyrene. It has won FDA approval for use in food packaging. [Pg.1001]

The principal adulterants used to-day consist of artificial esters, with or without a neutral oil such as lemon terpenes. Esters of the nonvolatile acids, or which are themselves of low volatility will be found in the evaporation residue of the oil, which if over 6 per cent, will at once arouse suspicion. The saponification value of this residue will therefore be increased if such esters are present. If the saponification value is over 185, it is almost certain, and if it is over 195, quite certain, that such an adulterant is present. Ethyl citrate is the principal ester of this type used as an adulterant. One per cent, of triethyl citrate added to the oil will raise the saponification value enormously—for example, from 175 to-220. [Pg.442]
