Ethyl tartrate

Most are very sparingly soluble in water note however that methyl formate, methyl oxalate, methyl succinate, methyl and ethyl tartrate, methyl and ethyl citrate are soluble in water. 

On the foimation of ethyl tartiate, see notes on Prep. 15, P247. Ethyl tartrate may also be obtained by the method described in Prep. 86, which rather curtails the operation and does not necessitate the use of more than half the c[uantity of ethyl alcohol required by the earlier process.

The esterification of oxalic acid by the method of Clarke,1 in which carbon tetrachloride is used to remove the water from the esterification mixture, is very satisfactory. However, the above procedure, which is based on the method of Frankland and Aston2 for the preparation of ethyl tartrate, is very easily carried out and the yields are as good as those described by Clarke. 

The chiral diol 5291 (Scheme 15), obtained from ethyl tartrate in one step (75%), was used to obtain the intermediate five-membered ring cyclic sulfite. The reaction...
