Resource pessimists counter that this process cannot proceed forever because the eternal persistence of demand for any given commodity that is destroyed by use must inevitably lead to its depletion. I lowever, the eternal persistence assumption is not necessarily correct. The life of a solar system apparently is long but finite. Energy sources such as nuclear fusion and solar energy in time could replace more limited resources such as oil and natural gas. Already, oil, gas, nuclear power, and coal from better sources have displaced traditional sources of coal in, for example, Britain, Germany, Japan, and France. [Pg.460]

Resonance forms do not imply different kinds of molecules with electrons shifting eternally between them. There is only one type of S02 molecule its structure is intermediate between those of the two resonance forms drawn for sulfur dioxide. [Pg.170]

Mentoring relationships are not eternal bonds, and the point will come at which they must disband. In most cases this happens because the mentor s ability to develop the mentee has come to an end. When this is the case, both mentor and mentee must be honest both to themselves and to one another the fledgling has to leave the nest. A failure to part at that stage is likely to result in resentment and even enmity. [Pg.320]

In a manner comparable to Christian eschatology, alchemical literature insisted on its own purificatory rituals that involved the preliminary torture, death and dismemberment of the prima materia. The canonical Catholic depiction of Christ s sacrificed body was a primary source for sixteenth and seventeenth century illustrations of the tortured body in anatomical and alchemical publications. In eflfect, the practice of Paracelsian alchemical medicine and surgery had a sacramental connotation, since the physician acted on the human body in the same manner as God worked on the great universal Macrocosmic Body. In like manner, the Paracelsian physician introduced the universal panacea, a liquid form of the philosopher s stone, into the alchemical alembic that was the Microcosmic human body. This alchemical medicine was permeated with the starry virtues of the heavens and the grace of Christ s Spirit, redeeming the body and soul of the patient by granting him not only an extended life on earth, but even eternal salvation. [Pg.11]

The primary concern of medieval Christian eschatology concerned the issue of individual subjectivity and its constituent components, body and soul. Christian eschatology, in a similar fashion to its preceding Iranian and Judaic sources, insisted that human identity was irrevocably embedded within its physical body. Hence, if humanity was to resurrect in its entirety, then it had to be accompanied by its original material form. A purely spiritual resurrection on the pagan Greek model would not fulhl Christ s promise that by his own death and resurrection he had saved the faithful from eternal death. [Pg.159]

How fast do chemical reactions occur The speed of a reaction is described by its rate. Rate is the number of events per unit time, such as the number of molecules reacting per second. Every elementary reaction has a characteristic rate. Some reactions are so fast that they are complete in the smallest measurable traction of a second, whereas others are so slow that they require almost an eternity to reach completion. The observed rate of an overall chemical reaction is determined by the rates of the elementary reactions that make up the mechanism. [Pg.1052]

Alchemy was developed in Europe in the medieval age and it founded the origin of modern chemistry [1]. The brilliantly shining color and the almost perfect chemical inertness of gold has attracted men and women as a S5m-bol of eternal power and beauty. It is therefore reasonable that so many people dreamed to produce gold artificially. Even Newton was deeply involved in the chemical S5m-thesis of gold [2]. [Pg.183]
