Two healthy young women took estrogen supplements for some 3 years and then developed classic Sjogren s syndrome (69). The syndrome was most severe in the woman who had taken the higher dose. These cases seem to have confirmed earlier reports that estrogens can play a role in the pathogenesis of Sjogren s syndrome in susceptible patients. 

The major clinical effects of estrogen deficiency are coronary heart disease and osteoporosis. Estrogen supplements in postmenopausal women have been directed mainly at slowing the process of osteoporosis. Nevertheless, atherosclerotic heart disease is the leading cause of death in women, accounting for more than 30%...

NMDA receptor modulators (47-50)], monoamine oxidase B (MAO B) inhibitors (51-55), antioxidants (52, 56-59), nootropics (41, 60), lipid-lowering agents (e.g., statins) (61), insulin (62), anti-inflammatory agents (63-67), and estrogen supplementation (63, 65, 66, 68, 69). Because several other reviews are available that compare these therapeutic approaches (70-77), the remainder of the present chapter focuses on ion channel modulation approaches to cognition enhancement. 

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends low-dose estrogen supplementation for amenorrhea if age is greater than 16 until normal menses returns. Most studies do not find that oral contraceptives improve BMD. Bisphosphonates are not approved for children. Hormone therapy and bisphosphonates may be used in adults. Recombinant IGF-I and dehydroepiandrosterone are being explored as possible for treatments for women with osteoporosis. 

Thymosin P4 levels are high in cord blood compared to adult serum. In rodents, TP4 continues to decline with age for a period that is later in life than Taj. Levels decline in both postmenopausal and functionally castrate females (Rebar et al., 1983). Estrogen supplementation in these women relieves the symptoms of the endocrine failure, but thymosin P4 levels are even lower after long-term estrogen treatment. 

One of the most serious, and possibly irreversible, consequences of anorexia nervosa is osteoporosis, and estrogen supplementation has been advocated for its treatment.
