Estimation General considerations

It is not possible to know whether any single sample estimate, like the sample mean, is a good estimate of the population parameter that it is intended to estimate. However, it is possible to use the fact that most estimates of the sample statistic (for example, sample mean) are not too far removed from the population parameter, as specified by the shape of the sampling distribution, to define a range of values of the population parameter (for example, population mean) that are best supported by the sample data. [Pg.70]

As exact knowledge of the population parameter is not possible, we must settle for a range of values that, with some specified probability or confidence, are most plausible. In other words, we would like to know the lower limit (LL) and upper limit (UL) of the most probable range of values of the true population parameter. The quantity a is the probability that the interval estimate does not include the value of the parameter of interest - that is, p in this case. In most cases small values of a are desirable (for example, 0.10 or 0.05). Four general considerations argue that acid rain is a serious and even urgent problem that needs to be addressed without delay. First, the number of resources threatened by acid rain is large. About one quarter of the smrface water in the eastern U.S. — some 14,000 square miles — is moderately to highly sensitive to acid rain.
