Equation ionic

You already know that some metals are more reactive than others. You may also have carried out an investigation on the metal activity series in a previous course. In Investigation 10-A, located on page 470, you will discover how this series is related to oxidation and reduction. You will write chemical equations, ionic equations, and half-reactions for the single displacement reactions of several metals. 

Students tend to equate ionic / v / character with high oxidation state. On the contrary, the higher the oxidation state, the more covalent the bonds formed by an element. Bonds in SnCl4 are more covalent than those in SnCl2. 

To show the details of reactions that involve ions in aqueous solutions, chemists use ionic equations. Ionic equations differ from chemical equations in that substances that are ions in solution are written as ions in the equation. Look again at the reaction between aqueous solutions of sodium hydroxide and copper(II) chloride. To write the ionic equation for this reaction, you must show the reactants NaOH(aq) and CuCl2(aq) and the product NaCl(aq) as ions. 

An ionic equation that shows all of the particles in a solution as they realistically exist is called a complete ionic equation. Note that the sodium ions and the chloride ions are both reactants and products. Because they are both reactants and products, they do not participate in the reaction. Ions that do not participate in a reaction are called spectator ions and usually are not shown in ionic equations. Ionic equations that include only the particles that participate in the reaction are called net ionic equations. Net ionic equations are written from complete ionic equations by crossing out all spectator ions. For example, a net ionic equation is what remains after the sodium and chloride ions are crossed out of this complete ionic equation.

For example, when chlorine gas or chlorine water is added to an aqueous solution of potassium bromide, the chlorine (being higher up the activity series) replaces the less reactive bromine. The colourless solution of potassium bromide turns orange as the bromine is produced. The bromine is more easily identified if a small volume of non-polar organic solvent, such as tetrachloromethane (carbon tetrachloride), is added to the reaction mixture. The bromine, being non-polar, will enter the organic layer and due to its higher concentration will be more visible. Formula equations, ionic equations and half-equations can be written for this replacement reaction, for example ... 

Write the full equation, ionic equation, and net ionic equation for the neutralization reaction between ammonia and sulfuric acid. Identify the spectator ion(s). 

Without knowledge of the crystal structure of CuH, calculate a value for its lattice energy using the Kapustinskii equation. (Ionic radii can be found in Tables 7.5 and 10.3.)... 

If only the reactivity ratios and reference are given, then, either no experimental data was given or the journal was not available and the Chemical Abstracts summary was the source of the data. If a Y or N (yes or no) appears in the conversion (Conv.) column then the reactivity ratios were recalculated. If a recalculation was performed but the 95% confidence columns (95%) are still left blank, it indicates that only two feed/polymer data pairs were available. In general, if there is a citation (Y or N) in die Conv. column but no reactivity ratios are shown in the reactivity ratio columns, the copolymerization did not follow the copolymerization equation (ionic or penultimate effects were prevalent). In a few cases, the data were too scattered to allow a reactivity ratio calculation.
