Fluorinated biphenyls have been incorporated into numerous Hquid crystal stmctures as attested by patents and pubHcations from the following organizations E. Merck GmbH (257,258) Sharp (258) Hoffmann-LaRoche (259) Kanto Chemical (260) U.K. Defence Secretariat (261) Dainippon (262) Chisso (263) Sanyo Chemical (264) and the University of Hull (265). Seiko Epson has also patented fluorinated terphenyls for Hquid crystal appHcations (266). [Pg.328]

The major brands are marketed by Hewlett Packard, Cannon, Epson, and others. There are also house brands that sell for less. The spent ink cartridges are removed from the printers and discarded, and new ones inserted into the printers. The spent cartridges contain much valuable plastics and metals, but are too small in quantity to warrant a recycle effort. There are also manufacturers who sell the ink separately, to be injected by hypodermic needles into the spent cartridges. The major manufacturers always warn the consumers not to use these low cost alternatives, as they may be inferior in quality and give poor performance due to lack of compatibility. [Pg.279]

Innovation in industrial inkjet is fast and furious. As an indication of the technological activities in this field, there were 3553 US and European patents and patent applications in 2006 alone (translating to roughly 300 per month), making inkjet one of the most actively patented technologies in the world. Hewlett-Packard, Canon, Seiko Epson, and SUverbrook lead the patenting pack, but their efforts cover less than half of all the current activity. [Pg.12]

This mechanism is used in various patents which differ in the materials used, method of applying the "reaction solution" on top of the substrate and additives used to improve the print performance. One patent, issued by Epson Corporation, uses a resin in emulsion... [Pg.92]

Acustom polymeric dispersant is an improvement—the polymer molecule is tailored to the pigment and to the application. There are dozens of patents from companies such as Canon, Epson, KAO, DIG, DuPont and others describing the synthesis and use of custom pigment dispersants for IJ. Some of them are very complex, involving such techniques as grafting and block co-polymerization. For example, some DuPont patents describe a dispersant based on a diblock co-polymer A-B or triblock co-polymer A-B-A where block B has an affinity for the pigment, whereas block A is responsible for colloidal stabilization. ... [Pg.112]

Osmotic diarrhoea. Occurs if osmotically active solutes are retained in the intestinal lumen water will not be absorbed and diarrhoea will result. Ingestion of poorly absorbed substrates, such as mannitol, sorbitol, Epson salts (MgS04) and some antacids (MgOHj), can occur in a number of malabsorption syndromes. For example, a failure to digest lactose (lactose intolerance) means that lactose remains in the intestinal lumen and osmotically holds water. [Pg.77]
