Epoxy resin curing agents Poly

A great variety of aromatic diamines and aliphatic di- and poly-amines are used as epoxy resin curing agents, and tert-amines can act as catalysts for anionic epoxide homopolymerisation. 

Our approach has been to synthesize the dleplsulflde resin corresponding to the normal blsphenol A type dlepoxlde resins. A polyamide type curing agent (Versamlde 140) was used because of our particular Interest In orthopedic adhesives, l.e. "bone cement". Some of the properties were therefore tailored to be optimum near body temperature. We have found very little prior literature on dleplsulflde resins. As prepared, the dleplsulflde resin analog of DGEBA Is a crystalline solid which must be heated above Its melting temperature for reaction. The most important combinations of epoxy resins and curing agents are summarized in Table 2.6. Depending on their molecular mass, bisphenol A epoxy resins can be cured by polyaddition via their epoxy or hydroxyl groups. Polyamines, poly thiols, and polyisocyanates are suitable for room temperature cure. Polyanhydrides, polyphenols, acids, and carboxy-functional polyesters are suitable for hot cure. 

Epoxy resins have been used successfully as strong binders in some special mixtures. A suitable type is Epon 828 (Shell Oil Co.) diluted with the active additive AGE (allyl glycidyl ether) that reduces the viscosity to less than one-tenth and about 8% DETA (diethytene-triamine) as a cold-curing catalyst (actually a cross-linking agent). This mixture can be used very much like a polyester resin. For less rigid compositions, a poly functional mercaptan such as LP-2 and LP-3 (Thiokol Chemical Corp.) can be used and such a resin can be combined with epoxy resin. A number of these types of resins are claimed as pyrotechnic binders in a patent by Hart, Eppig, and Powers. ...

The amine-reactive nitrile liquids are useful in formulating a modified hardener package through admixture with an amine, amidoamine or fatty poly-amide curing agent of choice (14). And novel elastomer-modified epoxy resin hardeners giving excellent reported adhesive properties have begun to appear in the marketplace (15).
