All experimental measurements were carried out with a Coulter EPICS V System. This instrument is a laser-based flow cytometer which, as one of its simpler analytical functions, utilizes light scatter measurements to accurately size cells or similar particles (e.g., artificial surfactant-stabilized microbubbles) suspended in aqueous media. The light scatter measurements are sensitive to particle sizes as small as 0.3 pm in diameter. [Pg.153]

EPIC, used air as the medium for battery cooling and heating. The principle of a thermal-management system using air is shown in Fig. 8.26. [Pg.234]

Medicines were made from natural, raw materials which were compounded in many, many different ways. A large portion of the medical treatment available in India today is the so-called Ayurvedic system (science of life) which is based on these ancient cures. Specific plants or combinations were used for specific ailments. Mention of these are given in the great epic poems of India, the Mahabharata, and the Rayman. Some of the medical research being carried out in India today is based on finding the active ingredients in the plants being used by the Ayurvedic physician. [Pg.235]

It appears that Bond grew to be increasingly critical of what he viewed as Brecht s reductive scientific-positivism underlying Epic Theatre. He may have viewed this model as an insufficient means of political analysis and politicised dramatic resolution. I believe that this was acutely reinforced for Bond by the failure of Eastern communism in the Soviet Union the system had profoundly failed to materialise a Marxist vision of freedom and justice. The fact that... [Pg.27]

Perhaps an even more impressive example of the activity of EPIC is shown in Figure 16.7. The conventional way to produce cyclohexylacetate is to use anhydrous hydrogen chloride as the catalyst [20], but a comparison of the different methods shows the advantages of the heterogeneous system (Table 16.2). [Pg.530]

Fig. 13.20. Self-organization of the tobacco virus. The virus consists of an RNA helix (shown as a single strand) containing about 7000 nucleotides - sufficient genetic material to code the production of 5-10 proteins (first level of supramolecular self-organization). The RNA strand interacts very effectively with a certain protein (shown as a drop the second level). The protein molecules associate with the RNA strand forming a kind of necklace, and then the system folds (third level) into a rod-like shape, epical for this virus. The rods are able to form a crystal (level four, not shown here), which melts after heating, but is restored when cooled down. Fig. 13.20. Self-organization of the tobacco virus.
