Anhydrous hydrogen chloride is a colorless gas which fumes strongly in moist air and has a highly irritating effect on body tissues. It has a sharp, suffocating odor and is shipped in cylinders as a liquefied compressed gas under its vapor pressure of 613 psig at 70°F (4226 kPa at 21.1°C). [Pg.415]

Chemically, hydrogen chloride is relatively inactive and noncorrosive in the anhydrous state. However, it is readily absorbed by water to yield the highly corrosive hydrochloric (muriatic) acid. It also dissolves readily in alcohol and ether and reacts rapidly (violently, in some cases) with many organic substances. At high temperatures (3240°F or 1782°C and above), hydrogen chloride tends to dissociate into its constituent elements. [Pg.415]

Anhydrous Hydrogen Chloride. Anhydrous hydrogen chloride is a colorless gas that condenses to a colorless liquid and freezes to a white crystalline solid. The physical and thermodynamic properties of HCl are summarized in Table 2 for selected temperatures and pressures. Figure 1 shows the temperature dependence of some of these properties. [Pg.437]

Gas combines with moisture to become corrosive to eyes, skin, and respiratory system. Baseline physical exam should stress respiratory system, eyes, and skin. Pulmonary test and chest X-ray recommended. E q)osure to airborne concentrations above 1500 ppm can be fatal in a few minutes. Irritating properties detectable at about PEL. Should only be used in an efficient fume hood. Workers should wear gas-tight goggles, acid, resistant aprons, gloves, and outerwear. [Pg.326]

Protamine sulfate can easily be converted to the hydrochloride salt by the use of anion-exchange resins an aqueous solution of protamine sulfate is applied to a column packed with Amberlite IRA-400 (chloride form), the column is eluted with water and the effluent fractions containing protamine are lyophilized to give the hydrochloride salt (Ando et aL 1957 Yamasaki, 1958). By treating the picrate salt with 0.2 N hydrogen chloride-anhydrous methanol at room temperature, Felix s group obtained protamine methyl ester hydro-cloride salt (Rauen et aL 1952). [Pg.12]
