A course related to air pollution was introduced in 1970 and after few years was absorbed into the Environmental Engineering curriculum upon formation of that department. Professor James Vrentas joined IIT in 1972 and since then an elective course in polymer processing has been offered frequently. 

Just as safety, loss prevention, and environmental protection cannot be separated from other essential chemical plant activities, the practical application to the chemical engineering curriculum could be explained by emphasizing the consequences of poor design which could lead to injury or property damage. 

In this paper, we attempt a narrow survey of some important problems in environmental chemical engineering to convey their flavor and challenges. The open-ended character of environmental chemical engineering problems makes them ripe for innovation. We hope to stimulate interest in attacking these problems, in terms of both research and inclusion in the basic chemical engineering curriculum.

A text that introduces thermodynamics, unit operations, kinetics, and process dynamics. The third edition is revised to reflect curriculum changes that include biotechnology, environmental engineering, and microelectronics. 

The next speaker in this session was Dr. Cliff Davidson from Carnegie Mellon University s Environmental Institute. Davidson divided his talk into four topic areas (1) skills and attitudes that future engineers will need (2) environment across the curriculum initiative (3) case studies in green engineering and (4) center for sustainable engineering A three-university consortium comprising Carnegie Mellon, University of Texas at Austin, and Arizona State University.
