Other Coordination Complexes. Because carbonate and bicarbonate are commonly found under environmental conditions in water, and because carbonate complexes Pu readily in most oxidation states, Pu carbonato complexes have been studied extensively. The reduction potentials vs the standard hydrogen electrode of Pu(VI)/(V) shifts from 0.916 to 0.33 V and the Pu(IV)/(III) potential shifts from 1.48 to -0.50 V in 1 Tf carbonate. These shifts indicate strong carbonate complexation. Electrochemistry, reaction kinetics, and spectroscopy of plutonium carbonates in solution have been reviewed (113). The solubiUty of Pu(IV) in aqueous carbonate solutions has been measured, and the stabiUty constants of hydroxycarbonato complexes have been calculated (Fig. 6b) (90). [Pg.200]

Distortion Another problem with extrusions is caused by distortion of the section by the effect of heat and other environmental conditions such as exposure to water or chemical agents that tend to soften the plastic. These distortions are generally reversals of the profile back to the shape that it had exiting in the die. This action indicates that the post die forming operations were done at a lower than desirable temperature which results in a molded-in stress. When the stress is relieved the product distorts. The use of stress terminology has been discussed in Chapter 1, where it was pointed out that the value of the term stress in indicating some adverse force or influence lies in its extreme generality, without the need for a precise quantification. Nevertheless it is appropriate that a scientific discipline should be concerned with definable quantities. This will be the starting point for this paper, which will follow the example of Levitt (1972) who applied the concepts and terminology of mechanical stress (force per unit area) and strain (a definable dimension change) to the study of plant responses to the environment. This approach will be developed here in an attempt to incorporate the philosophies behind stress effects into a general treatment of the responses of ecosystems to adverse environmental conditions. [Pg.11]

Ihe implementation of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) and the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (Superfund) has underscored a number of the weaknesses in our capabilities to measure the chemical characteristics of wastes. We are now being called upon to identify and quantify with unprecedented sensitivity hundreds of chemicals found in many types of materials within waste sites, near discharges of hazardous contaminants, and in the surrounding environments. Extrapolations from a limited number of measurements must indicate the general environmental conditions near waste sites. The measurements have to be made faster and cheaper than ever before, with the precision and bias of each measurement fully documented. Thus, the technical challenges facing the monitoring community are substantial. [Pg.1]

Three of five men, who lost consciousness within a few minutes of entering a partially drained underground liquid manure storage tank, died before reaching the hospital autopsy showed that two had massive liquid manure pulmonary aspiration, while the third had fulminant pulmonary edema without manure aspiration (Osbem and Crapo 1981). Markedly elevated heart-blood sulfide-ion levels indicated significant hydrogen sulfide exposure. Half-life estimates of approximately 28 days for thiophanate-methyl indicate a very slow decay compared to methiocarb with an estimate of half-life of about 11 days. The application of a model based on a first-order decay process resulted in fairly high R2 and significant fit. The results suggest that both pesticides are relatively stable compared to other compounds under similar environmental conditions (Brouwer et al., 1994).
