In principle, solvent extraction is an environmentally friendly process with no air or water pollution, provided the plant flows are properly designed. It could, therefore, replace many of the present polluting processes. A particular problem, however, is the solvent extraction effluents, which may contain biochemically active substances posing new hazards to the environment. These can be handled by various solid sorbents, which then can be incinerated, but the advantage of the solvent extraction process may be lost. There is, therefore, a demand for biodegradable and environmentally benign solvent phases. In the future, additional attention is required to this field. 

Chemistry of the Environment focuses on the role of chemistry in environmental issues, including air and water pollution, solid wastes, and the relatively new field of green chemistry. The term pollution refers to the release of harmful or ohjectionahle substances into the environment, most commonly as the result of human activities. Some of the most obvious examples of pollution are smoke produced by industrial operations, carbon dioxide and other gases released into the atmosphere as a by-product of burning fuels, silt and sediment washed off land by rainwater, and garbage dumped on land. 

Probably the strongest conclusion produced by these information gathering activities was that people were generally ambivalent about the refinery, voicing neither major criticisms nor major support. In general, those contacted believed that the refinery complied with environmental laws and that this compliance probably protected the community. Most people felt that there were more pressing problems in the Yorktown area than the refinery. For example, land development, traffic, and sewer and water problems were cited as major quality-of-life concerns. When specifically asked about air pollution, water pollution, and disposal of solid waste, residents indicated that they did have a concern with respect to the oil refinery. These concerns, however, were not strongly felt and not specific. 

To follow the environmental law and to remove small but sometimes persistent concentrations of pollutants activated carbons seem to be the media of choice. They are relatively inexpensive, easily to obtain, and owing to their enormously high surface area and pore volume, they are able to remove and retain even traces of air and water pollutants. Activated carbons, due to their unique surface chemistry act not only as adsorbents but also as catalysts for oxidation of inorganic and organic species. Moreover, their surface can be modified and tailored toward desired applications. 

As governmental bodies, the Ministries of Environment are the competent authority for the majority of activities related to environmental issues such as trans-boundary air and water pollution, troposphere ozone and climate change, for instance. The main task of a ministry on these issues is therefore to elaborate and implement the environment policy. As it is nearly everywhere within the Member States of the European Union, the ministries carry out only a few studies and analysis by themselves, but a lot of routine work is allocated to different administrations or institutions. Further, the quality of available or useable water is decreasing due to increasing water pollution from industrial, agricultural and other human activity. In fact, it is becoming a major environmental problem today. Unlike other industrial sectors, mining activities particularly opencast mines, draw special attention from environmental degradation point of view. Besides air and water pollutions, it involves excavations of land, loss of soil, degradation/ disfiguring of surface area and deforestation. Valuable topsoil and usable land is lost forever, which cannot be fully recovered. Natural drainage system and groundwater table is disturbed which not only afiects the inhabitants in close proximity but also people living in faraway places.
