Entropy coding

After quantisation the channels with discrete levels are represented by integers. In the third step this data is further entropy coded to reduce the bit rate. Entropy coding assigns fewer bits to integers with higher frequency of occurrence and more bits to integers with lesser frequency of occurrence. This fully invertible step allows us to represent the data in even less space than the original data after quantisation. For a detailed description see [39]. [Pg.509]

The 2-D wavelet compression algorithm used was similar to the 3-D compression algorithm except that the 2-D WT of each slice was computed. Multiple slices were compressed slice by slice with the 2-D method. The same applies for the compression using the JPEG algorithm. [Pg.511]

Theorem 4-2. Given an arbitrary discrete memoryless source, V, of entropy H U), and given any e > 0 and 8 > 0, it is possible to find an N large enough so that all but a set of probability less than e of the N length sequences can be coded into unique binary sequences of length at most [H(U) + h]N. [Pg.199]

Thus the coding has reduced the entropy of the source somewhat, since it is unable to supply unique code words for all sequences on the other hand, the redundancy per source letter in the code words, Nb — S(W)IN, can be made arbitrarily small. [Pg.200]

Theorem 4-4 can now be used to obtain a simple relationship between tire entropy of a source and the minimum average length of a set of binary code words for the source. [Pg.202]

Suppose now that we had some other source of entropy R < R nats per channel symbol. We know from Theorem 4-2 that this source can be coded into binary digits as efficiently as desired. These binary digits can then be coded into letters of the alphabet %, , uM. Thus, aside from the equal probability assumption for the M letter source, our results are applicable to any source. [Pg.220]

It must always be remembered that optimisation is not an exact science and, therefore, it is sometimes difficult to define confidence limits in the final optimised values for the coefficients used in the thermodynamic models. The final outcome is at least dependent on the number of experimental measurements, their accuracy and the ability to differentiate between random and systematic errors. Concepts of quality can, therefore, be difficult to define. It is the author s experience that it is quite possible to have at least two versions of an optimised diagram with quite different underlying thermodynamic properties. This may be because only experimental enthalpy data were available and different entropy fiinctions were chosen for the different phases. Also one of the versions may have rejected certain experimental measurements which the other version accepted. This emphasises the fact that judgement plays a vital role in the optimisation process and the use of optimising codes as black boxes is dangerous. [Pg.311]

Human DNA contains almost twice as much information as is needed to code for all the substances produced in the body. Likewise, the digital data sent from Voyager 2 contain one redundant bit out of every two bits of information. The Hubble space telescope transmits three redundant bits for every bit of information. How is entropy related to the transmission of information What do you think is accomplished by having so many redundant bits of information in both DNA and the space probes ... [Pg.456]
