Until downhole motors became available a whipstock (Fig. 3.15) which is a slightly asymmetric steel joint, was inserted in the drill string. The assembly is oriented downhole and a rathole is drilled which is then enlarged to full bore hole size. The technique is still used in wells where hole conditions e.g. high temperatures, are unsuitable for downhole motors (see below). 

It obvious a today s demand on repetitive inspections to predict the safety of pressure equipments during the oncoming service period. The acceptance from the industry for this kind of testing is accessible, if you can fulfil this requirement an enlarge in this way the competitiveness. 

Application of experimental devices allows to perform NDT of products, made out of materials of low density (Al-Mg - alloys, Be, plastics) with high defectoscopic sensitivity up to 0,5 %. Inch-size X-ray vidicons used complete with microfocal X-ray tubes and X-ray image enlargement method allow to obtain resolution up to SO pairs of lines per mm. 

This research examines the feasibility of a technique based upon the CT principle using a microfocus X-ray source with an image intensifier while the examined object is being rotated The attainable enlargement is up to 200. The data to be processed is collected from the whole surface of the image intensifier by a frame grabber and noise suppression is performed. 

The easy and convenient postprocessing of test findings enables an exact survey of flaws, enlargement of any zones requested, and shifting of the recording threshold within the recorded dynamic range of 24 dB. 

The HILL-SCAN 30XX boards can be used in different PCs. Desktop- and tower-PCs as well suited for laboratory uses. For in-field inspections rugged notebooks and portable PCs are advantageous. A typical portable system is shown in Fig. 2 (USPC 3010), used in MUSE (Mobile Ultrasonic Equipment). This portable PC not only contains the boards for ultrasonic testing but also a controller with power supply for stepper motors, so that a manipulator can be connected directly. The MUSE system is enlarged with a water circulation system which enables a local immersion technique" for in-field inspections. A typical result is shown in Fig. 3, which presents a D-scan of a CFRP- component in RTM-techniques. The defect area caused by an impact is clearly indicated. The manipulator is described in [3]. 

With the development and introduction of a new complete 3D ultrasonic inspection system FORCE Institute enlarges the inspection possibilities and increases the overall quality of UT inspection of complex geometry components. 

The preceding conclusion is easily verified experimentally by arranging two bubbles with a common air connection, as illustrated in Fig. II-2. The arrangement is unstable, and the smaller of the two bubbles will shrink while the other enlarges. Note, however, that the smaller bubble does not shrink indefinitely once its radius equals that of the tube, its radius of curvature will increase as it continues to shrink until the final stage, where mechanical equilibrium is satisfied, and the two radii of curvature are equal as shown by the dotted lines. 

An enlarged view of a crystal is shown in Fig. VII-11 assume for simplicity that the crystal is two-dimensional. Assuming equilibrium shape, calculate 711 if 710 is 275 dyn/cm. The charge on a droplet surface produces a repulsive barrier to coalescence into the London-van der Waals primary attractive minimum (see Section VI-4). If the droplet size is appropriate, a secondary minimum exists outside the repulsive barrier as illustrated by DLVO calculations shown in Fig. XIV-6 (see also Refs. 36-38). Here the influence of pH on the repulsive barrier between n-hexadecane drops is shown in Fig. XIV-6a, while the secondary minimum is enlarged in Fig. XIV-6b [39]. The inset to the figures contains t,. the coalescence time. Emulsion particles may flocculate into the secondary minimum without further coalescence.

Section IB presents results that the analytic properties of the wave function as a function of time t imply and summarizes previous publications of the authors and of their collaborators [29-38]. While the earlier quote from Wigner has prepared us to expect some general insight from the analytic behavior of the wave function, the equations in this secbon yield the specific result that, due to the analytic properties of the logarithm of wave function amplitudes, certain forms of phase changes lead immediately to the logical necessity of enlarging...

Iodine occurs to a minute extent (less than 0.001 %) in sea water, but is found in greater concentration, combined in organic form, in certain seaweeds, in oysters and in cod livers. Crude Chile saltpetre, or caliche contains small amounts of sodium iodate, NalOj. from which iodine can be obtained (see below). Some insoluble iodides, for example liiose of silver and mercury(II), occur in Mexico. Iodine is found in the human body in the compound thyroxin in the thyroid gland deficiency of iodine in diet causes enlargement of this gland (goitre). 

VI,34. RING ENLARGEMENT WITH DIAZOMETHANE CYCLOHEPTANONE FROM CYCLOHEXANONE... 

Reaction of cyclic ketones with diazoraethane leads to ring enlargement. Thus cyctohexanone (I) (1 mol) and diazomethane (1 mol) give /oheptanone (II) in about 60 per cent, yield together with a little epoxide (III) as by product and some cj/cioootanone (IV) resulting from further reaction of cyctoheptanone with diazomethane. ... 

The new addition of the building was completed by the end of 1994 and dedicated in February 1995. Because I coincidentally won the Nobel Prize just two months before (more about this in Chapter 11), some believed that there was some relationship between the two events. This certainly was not the case. Katherine Loker and our other friends had made their wonderful gifts well before, and it was just a fortunate coincidence that we had such good timing to celebrate the opening of our enlarged institute.
