Engineers’ lack

Control of industrial polymerization reactors is a challenging task because, in general, control engineers lack rigorous polymerization process knowledge, process model, and rapid online or inline sensors to measure polymer properties. It may be of little consequence whether the process development chemist or engineer lacks an understanding of the secondary reactions on the basis of customary kinetic studies, since they frequently play hardly any role, as long as the distillation does not continuously shift the equilibrium. However, the careful process engineer will carry out experiments in a reaction column to verify the achievable purities and yields. And with the results of these experiments a scale-up problem exists. 

An engineer lacking a strong ethical value system that could offset cultural pressure within her/his firm and/or external political-economic pressure to engage in ethically questionable engineering practices. 

The idea of the condensate seal is quite familiar to operators. For engineers lacking field experience, it is a surprising concept. Figure 18-10 shows a water level in the channel head. This is the condensate seal. Once this level drops out of the channel head and steam starts blowing through the control valve, the reboiler heat-transfer duty is drastically reduced. 

Research studies have been conducted in all industry sectors on the design of bonded joints and the influence of this on joint strength and durability. Many have found their way into published texts for engineers. Lack of space prevents any more than a brief summary of such a large topic. 

The application of formal methods requires discrete mathematics and logic background and many of the current generation of software engineers lack this knowledge.
