Pyrolysis vessels can range from 3 to 20 m in volume. Towards the upper end of the size range, heat transfer limitations occur and it is necessary to use heat exchanging pipes internally to assist with heat transfer. The problem with an array of heat exchanging pipes internally however is that they are susceptible to fouling and coking by a carbonaceous residue.

Rem—A unit of dose equivalent that is used in the regulatory, administrative, and engineering design aspects of radiation safety practice. The dose equivalent in rem is numerically equal to the absorbed dose in rad multiplied by the quality factor (1 rem is equal to 0.01 sievert).

Engineering design, then, involves many considerations (Fig. 1.7). The choice of a material must meet certain criteria on bulk and surface properties (strength and corrosion resistance, for example). But it must also be easy to fabricate it must appeal to potential consumers and it must compete economically with other alternative materials. In the next chapter we consider the economic aspects of this choice, returning in later chapters to a discussion of the other properties. 

This chapter has attempted to describe briefly some properties of polymers relevant to product design in terms of molecular behaviour. For in depth consideration the reader should consult more detailed reviews (e.g. refs 4, 5 and 6). There also exist specialist monographs concerned with practical aspects of product design (e.g. refs 7 and 11). Mention should also be made of excellent booklets by materials suppliers (e.g. refs 2 and 8) concerned with design aspects. Some material manufactures now supply comprehensive data books backed by computer data bases for multi-point engineering data (e.g. ref. 12). 

To appreciate the engineering aspects of Powerforming, it would be helpful to go over some of the engineering design considerations. 

B. References Pertinent to the Engineering or Reactor Design Aspects of Kinetics... 

This year s group of review articles selected for their interest and importance to chemical engineers is devoted in large part to the engineering science aspects of our professional field. The papers presented are all applicable to more than one unit operation, and give theories, facts, and techniques from which the design methods in any one operation are constructed. 

Computer simulation can be used to consider not only the effect of the emissions system itself, but also the effect of engine design. For example, the effect of recalibrating the engine to produce hotter exhaust gas or a different gas composition can be considered without actually doing this on the engine until the result is known to be worthwhile. The rest of this section will consider these two aspects separately. All the examples shown in this section are for TWCs. 

For the above reasons, the authors concentrated on technological, engineering and designing aspects of the aminoplast granulation problem.
