To put this into context, in the Battle of the River Plate, the first major sea battle of the Second World War and very widely published, the German pocket battleship Admiral Graf Spec fought a bloody battle with three Allied cruisers, the Achilles, Ajax and Exeter over three days in December 1939. The total casualties in this engagement, German and British were 109. Indeed for the first three months of the Second World War, more civihans were killed in the UK through black-out accidents than service personnel died on active service. [Pg.26]

Herman Presser was indicted for violating this statute as part of a German-American social and military society called the Lehr und Wehr Verein ( Education and Defense Society ). The group was incorporated under Illinois law with the stated purpose of improving the mental and bodily condition of its members so as to qualify them for the duties of citizens of a republic. In December 1879, the group, led by Presser, engaged in a march and drill, armed with rifles, without the required license from the governor. [Pg.53]

Clausius was an ardent nationalist and patriot. In the Franco-German war of 1870, he took leave of his university duties to enlist (nearing age 50 ) for duties at the front, earning the Iron Cross in 1871. He commanded an ambulance corps of students recmited from Bonn that removed wounded soldiers from front-line action. Since 1986 she has been engaged as a professor at the University of DUsseldorf and at the Research Centre Jtllich. She has received numerous honours (including Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1979, the Technology Transfer Prize of the German Research Minister in 1983, and the Enzyme Engineering Award, USA, in 1995). [Pg.254]

It is also proven that after the camp was dismantled the Germans had engaged in no camouflage activities - such as planting lupine or trees, as witnesses have claimed. [Pg.500]
