In another case where the twin-screw extruder was used, the rubber and plastic were melt mixed with all ingredients in a similar manner as described in blend compositions for static vulcanizations. The product was then dumped, cooled, and granulated. The premixed granules were then fed into a twin-screw extruder where a very narrow temperature profile was maintained with a relative high compression (2 1), and the screw speed was adjusted depending on the final torque and the flow behavior of the extruded stock. NOTE Acid dosing with chromate-based cooling water programs continues to be used in many countries around the world, even in some fully industrialized and developed nations, and most often quite safely, despite the general environmental concerns from this form of chemical treatment. Such concerns need to continue to be voiced, however, as there are some irresponsible operators who use chromates and discharge directly into water courses, contravening local prohibitory regulations (that also may not be adequately enforced).

Cooling from the outside results in a frozen temperature gradient with a higher temperature in the interior (Fig. 6.20). Inner layers continue to relax from fluid flow while the outer layers gradually freeze. In effect, the stress-free state is a solid with a temperature gradient. The need to shrink the inside more relative to the outside at room temperature and the enforcement of the elastic compatibility criteria between the layers cause the appearance of compression on the outside and tension on the inside. The magnitude of the stresses so developed is related to the linear expansion coefficient of the solid. This mechanism is also called the viscoelastic mechanism.
