Energy transformer

Thermodynamics is the branch of science that embodies the principles of energy transformation in macroscopic systems. The general restrictions which experience has shown to apply to all such transformations are known as the laws of thermodynamics. These laws are primitive they cannot be derived from anything more basic. [Pg.513]

Vitamin An organie eompound present in variable, minute quantities in natural foodstuffs, and essential for the normal proeesses of growth and maintenanee of the body. Vitamins do not furnish energy, but are neeessary for energy transformation and for regulation of metabolism. [Pg.908]

Tantalum and niobium are added, in the form of carbides, to cemented carbide compositions used in the production of cutting tools. Pure oxides are widely used in the optical industiy as additives and deposits, and in organic synthesis processes as catalysts and promoters [12, 13]. Binary and more complex oxide compounds based on tantalum and niobium form a huge family of ferroelectric materials that have high Curie temperatures, high dielectric permittivity, and piezoelectric, pyroelectric and non-linear optical properties [14-17]. Compounds of this class are used in the production of energy transformers, quantum electronics, piezoelectrics, acoustics, and so on. Two of... [Pg.1]

Addressing the second question first leads to a critical constraint when thinking about new, more sustainable, technological developments, that is, the universal applicability of the laws of thermodynamics to aU physical, chemical and biological processes. A central and inescapable fact is the inevitability of waste formation. One statement of the second law of thermodynamics says that heat cannot be converted completely into work. Or, in other words, the energy output of work is always less than the energy transformed to accomplish it. A consequence of this is that, even in principle, it is impossible for any real process to proceed without the generation of some sort of waste. [Pg.7]

Oxidation at the benzylic position of indane -with potassium permanganate (Eq. 3.30) gives indanone in good yields and no PTC is necessary [133]. In a two-phase system consisting of an aqueous solution of KMn04 and indane in benzene an 80 % yield can be obtained under a reduced pressure of ca. 450 Torr. The authors explain this effect by the size of the cavitation bubbles, which is dictated to some extent by the over pressure. An optimal energy transformation, from acoustic to chemical, can thus take place. [Pg.118]
