Energy sources plant biomass

Biomass Mass of organisms that can be used as an energy source plants and algae convert the enei of the sun and carbon dioxide into energy that is stored in their biomass. 

In the past, research activities in the field of hemicellulose were aimed mainly at utilizing plant biomass by conversion into sugars, chemicals, fuel and as sources of heat energy. However, hemicelluloses, due to their structural varieties and diversity are also attractive as biopolymers, which can be utilized in their native or modified forms in various areas, including food and non-food applications. 

Because of limits on the amount of land accordingly available for growing plants that can be used for energy, bioenergy cannot be viewed globally as the sole replacement or substitute for fossil fuels, but rather as one element in a broader portfolio of renewable energy sources [1]. In rural locations in developing countries without current access to electricity, however, biomass can provide a transformative local power source. 

The direct combustion of wood and other plant matter has been a primary energy source in the past. Any type of biomass can be burned to produce heat or steam to turn a generator or perform mechanical work. Direct combustion is used in large power plants that produce up to 400 megawatts. Most direct combustion systems can use any type of biomass as long as the moisture content is less than 60%. Wood and wood residues are commonly used along with a number of other agricultural residues. 

Renewable electricity (RES-E) Electricity generated from renewable non-fossil energy sources, i.e., wind, solar, geothermal, wave, tidal, hydropower, biomass, landfill gas, sewage treatment plant gas and biogas (this corresponds to the definition in Directive 2001/77/EC on renewables, Article 2).
