Power and Energy

Reserve batteries have been developed for appHcations that require a long inactive shelf period foUowed by intense discharge during which high energy and power, and sometimes operation at low ambient temperature, are required. These batteries are usually classified by the mechanism of activation which is employed. There are water-activated batteries that utilize fresh or seawater electrolyte-activated batteries, some using the complete electrolyte, some only the solvent gas-activated batteries where the gas is used as either an active cathode material or part of the electrolyte and heat-activated or thermal batteries which use a soHd salt electrolyte activated by melting on appHcation of heat. [Pg.537]

The cost of a remote repair facility ranges from about 500,000 to 730,000, depending on the beam energy and power required. The current power range available for a portable accelerator is 45 to 300 W, with the energies varying from 1.5 to 9 MeV. [Pg.1035]

Pseudocapacitance is used to describe electrical storage devices that have capacitor-like characteristics but that are based on redox (reduction and oxidation) reactions. Examples of pseudocapacitance are the overlapping redox reactions observed with metal oxides (e.g., RuO,) and the p- and n-dopings of polymer electrodes that occur at different voltages (e.g. polythiophene). Devices based on these charge storage mechanisms are included in electrochemical capacitors because of their energy and power profiles. [Pg.215]

After these comments it is understandable that this expensive and life-limited system could succeed only in a few special applications, where the high energy and power density could not be achieved by other systems. [Pg.287]

Boilers can be classified, rated, sized, and compared by means of several energy and power terms. All boilers have a nameplate indicating net and gross output, which may be variously indicated in Btu/hr, horsepower (hp), pounds of steam per hour (lb/hr), or square feet of heating surface for any given pressure and temperature listing. [Pg.11]

Tellurium has been tested as a cathode material for use in conjunction with an anode made of alkali metal, primarily lithium, in power sources with a high specific energy and power [99], The theoretical specific energy for Li/Te pair is 612 Wh kg High-temperature (470 °C) cells with Li, Te, and eutectic (LiF-LiCl-Lil) electrolyte in the molten state, or with more convenient, albeit more resistive, paste-type electrolytes, have been tested in the laboratory. Similar layouts have been proposed for utilizing the Li/Se pair (theoretic cal specific energy 1,210 W h kg ) with the cell ingredients in the molten state (365 C) or with paste electrolyte at a lower temperature. [Pg.334]
