Off-gas from the coke burner ( -Gas) contains nitrogen, sulphur dioxide (SO2), hydrogen sulphide (H2S), carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), water vapour and other trace contaminants. The -Gas is directed to the CO Boiler for incineration where sulphur compounds are converted to SO2. The Boiler flue gas is passed through electrostatic precipitators for particulate control and then emission to atmosphere. The CO Boiler also serves as the Sulphur Plant tail gas incinerator. Maximum sulphur emissions are 146 tonnes/day or 10.6% of sulphur contained in bitumen feed to the cokers.

Hydrogen Sulphide.—Ion-molecule reaetions in methanol and H2S have been studied using a photoionization quadrupole mass spectrometer the proton affinity of H2S was determined. The sulphur emission and K absorption spectra from gaseous H2S have been measured. The spectrum comprises four peaks and the absorption spectrum three peaks that are of decreasing energy with increasing photon energy. 

The most important source of SO2 emissions is the combustion of coal, responsible for a contribution up to 71% [6]. As in the case of SOj, the HjS emissions are also much larger from the Northern Hemisphere. There is an inverse proportion only in the case of hydrogen sulphide produced by... 

When further harmful substances enter the atmosphere together with hydrogen sulphide, then the number of possible reactions is extended by combinations with primary and secondary pollutants. For example, there are the emissions from plants for the production of viscose fibres, where particularly H2S and CS2 are released into the atmosphere. The following reactions probably occur in the atmosphere ... 

The deposition of silver sulphide is detrimental as it contaminates the silver deposit and the solution, interferes with the kinetics of silver deposition and tends to cause chemical instability of the fixer. At extremely negative cathode potentials, cathodic decomposition of the fixer may result in emission of toxic hydrogen sulphide ... 

Since we began equipping our cars with catalytic converters, our customers complain of unpleasant smells primarily during short trips when the car is new. We know that this is caused by hydrogen sulphide (H2S) emissions when the sulphur that accumulates in the catalytic converter is released, and an appropriate solution must be found. 

An increasing interest in the protection of the natural enviromnent was manifested at the close of the twentieth century and continues in the early twenty-first century. Many different industrial technologies are characterised by the emission of highly dangerous substances, e.g. carbon disulfide and hydrogen sulphide, which continue to poison the environment. 

The aggressiveness of seawater near the coast may be increased by uptake of gases such as carbon dioxide and sulphur dioxide from emissions and sewage. Raised amounts of hydrogen sulphide from rotting matter, as well as raised amounts of ammonium salts, sulphides and mordant residues from industrial sewage can also add to the aggressiveness of seawater [5].
