Emerging mycotoxins

Oda (2005) showed that ENNs can influence functions of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. They were identified as inhibitors of major drug efflux pumps. Thus, they could potentially cause failures with metabolism of brewers yeast. However, the impacts of these emerging mycotoxins on the behaviour and activity of brewers yeast still need further investigation.

A number of emerging methods such as fluorescence polarization immunoassays, dipsticks, or even newer methods such as biosensors have been used for rapid screening of mycotoxin (ochratoxin A and Fusarium toxins—funionisms (FBs), moniliformin (MON), zearalenone (ZON), and type-A and -B trichothecenes in foods, fodders, blood, urea, and tissues of pigs after slaughter) (Curtui et al. 2001 Krska et al., 2007). 

In spite of the importance of fumonisins, detailed molecular mechanism for their biosynthesis has just started to emerge in recent years. An understanding of the molecular mechanism is critical to the development of rational approaches to mycotoxin elimination in agriculture and food industry. This review intends to highlight the process in this area. 

Barley-associated fungi are also responsible for the production of bioactive compounds called emerging or minor mycotoxins. This group includes toxins such as enniatins (ENNs) and beauvericin (BEA). Recently, the occurrence and fate of these toxins in the barley-to-beer chain have gained attention (Hu, Gastl, Linkmeyer, Hess, Rychlik, 2014 Vaclavikova et al., 2013).

Emerging seedlings can be killed. Undefined brown discoloration at base of tillers and lower leaf sheaths, dark brown nodes. Interior of stem and or grain shows pink fungal growth with some species. Premature ripening and whiteheads or blind ears. Some species can cause the production of mycotoxins in the grain.
