Emergency plans, ensuring safe

SIS This is the first automatic protection layer to BPCS and second overall layer of protection. It is desired that this shall be independent of BPCS. Even if these are combined it is necessary to ensure that single failure does not take toll of safety. SIS may stop part of plant operation and/or diverts some flow safely, etc. It may have separate set of instrumentation to detect and take safety action in the event of instrument/system failure. It has to be more aggressive than BPCS for safety functions. Under SIS, there will be several interlocks and protections to save the system and in many places like off shore design, ESD is considered as last resort or emergency plan achievable through PEs. [Pg.70]

Evacuation Plans. Many emergency events require the evacuation of at least some facility personnel, if only for precautionary reasons. This presents other needs, which must be addressed in the evacuation plan. Personnel who are directed to evacuate their normal work stations need visible wind direction indicators to help them move away from a dangerous gas cloud drifting downwind of the release point. If the building is enveloped in the cloud, however, they will need personal protective equipment in order to evacuate the building safely. When there are processes that must be rapidly shut down and/or isolated as evacuation proceeds, the plan must include written procedures and appropriate means to ensure incident-free action. [Pg.157]

In turn, the contractor must ensure that each of his or her employees is trained in safe work practices for performing the job at hand and that the employees are instructed in the known potential fire, explosion, or toxic release hazards related to his/her job and the process, and the applicable provisions of the emergency action plan. [Pg.53]
