The special phases with an embedded polar functional group are designed for reversed-phase chromatography. The polar function shields the silica surface, preventing the interaction of analytes with the acidic silanols on the silica surface. For many samples, they exhibit a significant difference in selectivity compared to simple hydrocarbon bonded phases. Also, the tailing of basic analytes is reduced. [Pg.66]

Fully endcapped Cg and Cig phases can exhibit hydrophobic collapse in eluents that contain close to 100% water. Polar functional groups on the packing prevent this phenomenon. Thus nonendcapped packings or packings with embedded polar fimctional groups are prefer for very polar analytes that require moWe phases with no or very little organic modifiers. [Pg.76]

The remedy to the problem is prevention it will not occur if the pressure on the column is maintained or if a drying of the column is avoided. If it does occur, it is simply solved by Vetting the column again with an organic solvent. Alternatively, columns that do not exhibit this phenomenon can be used in highly aqueous mobile phases.
