A quicker and convenient way is to use Sephadex gels. Complete separation of ovalbumin from ampholytes was possible on a gel bed of Sephadex G50, 50 cm high. (See Figure 8.) One should avoid drawdng far-reaching conclusions as to molecular weight on the basis of the gel filtration experiment. Furthermore the molecules of the carrier ampholyte are probably of elongated type and their polarity may also affect their behavior in the Sephadex gel. 

The "planar loop" extractor provides for shallow to intermediate bed depths and is offered by one American and several European companies. In this type the extractor compartments move along a path in a vertical plane. Chains driven by sprockets are used to move the compartments along the path (around the loop). Vertical tower types of these extractors have also been built and operated successfully however, building and maintenance requirements appear to have prevented their continued use. The horizontally elongated type of loop or belt extractor is offered by two European and one American supplier. The vertically elongated configuration appears to have been abandoned.

In summary, we see that it is not possible to assume that the simple rheo-optical law, equation (8), is universally applicable. It will generally be expected to apply only when the molecular structure of the material is disturbed by a small amount from its equilibrium configuration this will be in shearing flows at low stresses. For strong flows of the elongational type, and especially in dilute solutions, where it is easy to deform the structure greatly, one may expect the simple concept to fail.

Elongation. The extension produced by a tensile stress appHed to an elastomer, ie, elongation, is almost always reduced by fillers. Regardless of what type of filler is used, elongation decreases with increased loading above approximately 5 vol % (13). 

Drop breakage occurs when surrounding fluid stresses exceed the surface resistance of drops. Drops are first elongated as a result of pressure fluctuations and then spHt into small drops with a possibiUty of additional smaller fragments (Fig. 19). Two types of fluid stresses cause dispersions, viscous shear and turbulence. In considering viscous shear effects, it is assumed that the drop size is smaller than the Kohnogoroff microscale, Tj.
