The mechanism for the acid-catalyzed (sulfuric acid) Fischer esterification reaction below is addition, p.t., p.t., elimination write out the mechanism with all its steps. Remember to choose between the three types of additions, AdE2, AdN2, or AdgS, then choose between the three types of eliminations, El, E2, or ElcB. [Pg.212]

Redundant, isomorphic structures have to be eliminated by the computer before it produces a result. The determination of whether structures are isomorphic or not stems from a mathematical operation called permutation the structures are isomorphic if they can be interconverted by permutation (Eq. (6) see Section 2.8.7). The permutation P3 is identical to P2 if a mathematical operation (P ) is applied. This procedure is described in the example using atom 4 of P3 (compare Figure 2-40, third line). In permutation P3 atom 4 takes the place of atom 5 of the reference structure but place 5 in P2. To replace atom 4 in P2 at position 5, both have to be interchanged, which is expressed by writing the number 4 at the position of 5 in P. Applying this to all the other substituents, the result is a new permutation P which is identical to P]. [Pg.58]

Now the constant A can be eliminated from Eq. (4.59) by examining the ratio of two values of r with two different values of f (subscripts 1 and 2), remembering that B is a constant. In this case, we write... [Pg.252]

In Europe, the formation of the European Economic Community has created a requirement to bring food additive approvals of the member nations into alignment, so as to eliminate differences in laws that hinder the movement of foodstuffs among these nations. Historically the member countries have differed widely in approaches to food additive approval and their tendency to approve new additives. At the time of this writing, a framework directive for food additives and several specific directives for various categories of additives are nearing completion (3). [Pg.436]

Since in most practical circumstances at temperatures where vapour transport is used and at around one atmosphere pressure, die atomic species play a minor role in the distribution of atoms, it is simpler to cast the distribution equations in terms of the elemental molecular species, H2, O2 and S2, tire base molecules, and the derived molecules H2O, H2S, SO2 and SO3, and eliminate any consideration of the atomic species. In this case, let X, be tire initial mole fraction of each atomic species in the original total of atoms, aird the variables Xi represent the equilibrium number of each molecular species in the final number of molecules, N/. Introducing tire equilibrium constants for the formation of each molecule from tire elemental atomic species, with a total pressure of one aurros, we can write... [Pg.96]

Step 1 Set out the alternatives, ensuring that there is the same basis of comparison. Eliminate capital and revenue costs common to all protection systems. Write in the extra capital arising from the need to protect the structure. This capital cost may be a direct quotation from a processor or be calculated see Note 3 below). Make sure quotations or calculations refer to the same data. [Pg.1384]

To obtain a two-point equation, write the gas law twice and divide to eliminate constants. [Pg.108]

We run into a complication when we attempt to write an expression similar to equation (10.56) for a combination of N molecules that are not distinguishable.0 When this happens, combinations such as (ea. i + eb. ) and (ea2 + et,. i) are the same and should not be counted twice. Thus, the total number of terms in the partition function should be decreased to eliminate such duplications. To determine how to correct for this duplication, consider three gas molecules a, b, and c with energy levels we will represent as ei, e2, and e3. A total of 3 = 6 different combinations of these energy levels can be written as follows... [Pg.527]

Equations of state that are cubic in volume are often employed, since they, at least qualitatively, reproduce the dependence of the compressibility factor on p and T. Four commonly used cubic equations of state are the van der Waals, Redlich-Kwong, Soave, and Peng-Robinson. All four can be expressed in a reduced form that eliminates the constants a and b. However, the reduced equations for the last two still include the acentric factor u> that is specific for the substance. In writing the reduced equations, coefficients can be combined to simplify the expression. For example, the reduced form of the Redlich-Kwong equation is... [Pg.631]

The transition state composition is, moreover, uncertain as regards the number of solvent molecules it contains. Thus, we might write for Eq. (6-1), carried out in water, a composition of [Fe(CN)5N2H4C>33 nH20]t. The number of water molecules is of more than academic interest here, in that the net reaction extrudes one molecule of water. It has been suggested (from chemical evidence,1 not as a deduction from the rate law) that water is eliminated first, and that the reaction may occur by way of the following transition state (or intermediate) ... [Pg.128]

To eliminate the concentration of the intermediate N202 we proceed as follows. First, we write the expression for its net rate of formation. According to the mechanism, N202 is formed in the forward reaction in step 1, removed in the reverse reaction, and removed in step 2. Therefore the net rate of its formation is... [Pg.670]
