Electrostatic focusing shields

Whereas most magnetic-transport beams are a few m long in order to shield the annihilation gamma detector from the source, this length is notrequired if we are interested in particle spectroscopies, especially if electrostatic transport and focusing is incorporated into the design. Canter [45] has published several papers on positron optics to which the reader is referred. Figure 3.13 shows an example from the author s laboratory. [Pg.62]

In fact, traditional oxygen carrier molecules are dissolved in organic solvents. Only very few works focus on water-soluble carriers, such as Co-histidine which, however, suffers from very short lifetimes [28]. Therefore, a new type of water-soluble of Co-porphyrin with oxygen affinity was developed by Fiamrnengo et al. [43] for the PBM membrane. This novel carrier was based on the assembly of porphyrins with calixarenes. The self-assembly was driven by electrostatic interactions. The oxygen was assumed to complex inside the cavity of the porphyrin-calixarene assembly. Furthermore, the Co of the porphyrin was shielded from the other side by complexation with a nitrogenous base (1-methylimidazole or caffeine). [Pg.344]

An understanding of the mechanisms of the reactions in electrodics is provided by physical electrochemistry through the analysis of the electronic and ionic phases. For the first phase, the electronic character of the metals is important and hence solid state physics comes into focus. The quantal characteristic of the metal conductor defines the surface structure properties that are dealt by quantum electrochemistry. The concept of quantum particles is one of the main considerations of this chapter. The properties of the dual nature of this corpuscular wave produce equivocal understanding even in electrocatalysis. When a beam of electrons passes through a solid, the effective mass is the real quantity to be considered in the calculations, since the interactions of the electron with a nucleus are shielded by strong electrostatic interactions. [Pg.80]

Our interest is mainly focused on ring current effects in these quasi-annulenes. However, it is well known that deviations from electroneutrality at a carbon atom affects the shielding at that carbon and at the nearby protons. This latter effect is electrostatic in origin and is determined principally by the component of the electric field in the direction of the C—H bond. It is necessary to separate out the shielding contributions of such electrostatic effects, in order to make a meaningful comparison between the ring current effects in the ions and the neutral annulenes. Such a separation, however, is fraught with difficulties. In... [Pg.91]

Electrostatic electron focusing is susceptible to the presence of stray magnetic fields and so magnetic shielding may be necessary. [Pg.555]

One of the largest areas of industry to focus on with respect to the application of CNTs is the electronics industry, which foresees CNTs as possible replacement for components that perform roles from electrostatic dissipative [ESD] shields to electrodes. Over and above their high conductivity, thin CNT mats show little absorption in the UV-Vis light range. These two properties make them possible candidates for replacing existing materials used to prepare... [Pg.223]
