There is greatly renewed interest in electron solvation, due to improved laser technology. However it is apparent that a simple theoretical description such as implied by Eq. (9.15) would be inadequate. That equation assumes a continuum dielectric with a unique relaxation mechanism, such as molecular dipole rotation. There is evidence that structural effects are important, and there could be different mechanisms of relaxation operating simultaneously (Bagchi, 1989). Despite a great deal of theoretical work, there is as yet no good understanding of the evolution of free-ion yield in polar media.

High-energy irradiation of the lower alcohols gives solvated electrons, solvated protons and radicals [64]. Solvated electrons are also obtained by irradiation of the aprotic amide solvents [65] frequently used in organic electrochemistry and by the irradiation of hexamethylphosphoric triamide [66], N-Methylpyrrolidone which has properties similar to dimethylformaraide, is a useful solvent for the generation of solvated electrons because the reaction between electrons and protons is relatively slower than with dimethylformamide [67],... 

The results in this discussion will include those from our laboratory and experiments on electron solvation from other laboratories. The experiments that were done at Argonne made use of the stroboscopic pulse radiolysis technique, which will be discussed below. Experiments from other laboratories have made use of pulse radiolysis and laser photolyis techniques for the measurement of electron solvation. 

We shall discuss separately the results for electron solvation and anion solvation at room temperature in different alcohols to provide a basis for the discussion of solvation mechanisms. This will be followed by a discussion of solvation at lower temperatures and in alcohol-alkane mixtures to further highlight the similarities and differences between anion and electron solvation.

It is worth noticing that, in contrast to what have been reported for the electron solvation dynamics in water and in alcohols at room temperature, we do not observe a hypsochromic translation of the electron absorption spectrum.
